Toyota Recalls RAV4s: Toyota is initiating a recall of over 1.85 million RAV4 vehicles due to a battery-related issue that could elevate the risk of fires during sharp turns, the company announced in a press release on Wednesday.
The recall will encompass RAV4 models from 2013 to 2018. According to Toyota, some of these compact SUVs may have replacement batteries with smaller top dimensions. This unique battery shape can lead to movement during forceful turns, potentially causing the positive battery terminal to contact a clamp and trigger a short-circuit, thereby increasing the risk of fire.
Toyota is actively working on a solution to address this issue. Once the remedy is available, Toyota dealers will undertake a cost-free replacement of the battery hold-down clamp, battery tray, and positive terminal cover. The company intends to notify affected customers by late December.
This recall comes in the wake of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reporting 11 complaints in 2021 alleging fires occurring on the left side of RAV4 engines, unrelated to car crashes. These incidents frequently took place during driving conditions, with some even occurring when the ignition was turned off, according to the NHTSA.
For example, in December 2020, an RAV4 owner reported leaving their vehicle in a parking lot with the ignition off, only to return a few minutes later and find the car engulfed in flames, originating from the front of the vehicle. Similarly, in August 2020, a 2017 RAV4 hybrid experienced warning messages on the dashboard screen and white smoke emerging from under the hood when traveling at 50 miles per hour. Moments later, flames erupted from the engine compartment, leading to the destruction of the vehicle.
The NHTSA noted that the “overall number of vehicle fire allegations with the battery as the area of origin is larger than its peer population.”
As of the time of this report, Toyota representatives could not be reached for comment during after-work hours on Wednesday.
