Adam Patrick DeVine Bio
Adam Patrick DeVine (born November 7, 1983) is an American comedian, actor, producer, and screenwriter who has become a prominent figure in comedy television and film. He is best known for co-creating and starring in the Comedy Central series Workaholics and his subsequent Comedy Central series Adam DeVine’s House Party. DeVine has built a career spanning television and film, with notable roles including Bumper in the Pitch Perfect franchise and Kelvin Gemstone in the HBO series The Righteous Gemstones.
Early Life and Background
Adam Patrick DeVine was born on November 7, 1983, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Dennis and Penny DeVine. He grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, and graduated from Millard South High School in 2002. He later attended Orange Coast College in California, where he befriended his future Workaholics co-star Blake Anderson.
When DeVine was eleven years old, he suffered a life-altering accident while riding his bicycle across a street in Omaha. A 42-ton cement truck struck him, and the first two wheels rolled over him before he was knocked unconscious and fell into a coma. He was rushed to intensive care, where he remained unconscious for two weeks. The accident broke all the bones in both of his legs, crushed his legs below the knee, ripped the skin from his legs, caused a collapsed lung, fractured several ribs, and led to multiple infections. Doctors were uncertain whether he would ever walk again. He underwent 26 surgeries over the following years and spent much of his time in a wheelchair. Remarkably, his bicycle absorbed the full force of the impact, which likely saved his life. He eventually regained full mobility and has credited the experience with teaching him that anything is possible.
During his lengthy recovery, DeVine coped by calling his local radio station and impersonating celebrities to entertain himself and others. After returning to school, he experienced bullying but found that making jokes helped deflect attention from his injuries. He later recognized this period as the foundation of his belief in comedy’s power to bring people together.
Path to Comedy
DeVine’s path to professional comedy began during his college years at Orange Coast College, where he connected with like-minded friends who shared his ambition. In 2006, he teamed up with Blake Anderson, Anders Holm, and Kyle Newacheck to form the sketch-comedy group Mail Order Comedy. The group toured together performing live shows and gained significant popularity through social media platforms like MySpace and YouTube.
Their online success led to television opportunities. In April 2008, the group appeared on G4’s Attack of the Show!, featuring their music video Wizards Never Die. They released Purple Magic, an album containing 14 tracks, in April 2009. The group’s collaboration and shared creative vision would eventually propel them into mainstream television success.
