Early Life and Background
Angela Faye Kinsey was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, on June 25, 1971. When she was two years old, her family relocated to Jakarta, Indonesia, where her father worked as a drilling engineer. The family remained in Indonesia for roughly 13 years, during which time Kinsey attended the Jakarta Intercultural School and picked up Indonesian, a language she has said she still occasionally speaks.
At the age of 14, Kinsey and her family returned to the United States and settled in Archer City, Texas. Growing up between Indonesia and Texas gave her a broad cultural perspective and a love of storytelling that would later shape her interest in performance. She later described her years abroad as foundational to her curiosity about people and characters.
After completing high school, Kinsey enrolled at Baylor University, where she studied English and graduated in 1993. She joined the Chi Omega sorority, took as many theatre classes as possible, and participated in the Baylor in London program, an experience that deepened her interest in the performing arts.
Path to Acting
Following her Baylor graduation, Kinsey served as an intern on the NBC talk show Late Night with Conan O’Brien, an experience she has called transformative. She worked with the show’s band leader, drummer Max Weinberg, and the energy of late-night television inspired her to take a coast-to-coast road trip from New York City to California. During her time in New York, she also worked as an extra on Saturday Night Live.
After settling in Los Angeles, Kinsey trained at The Groundlings and at iO West, sharpening her improvisation skills. Following a two-woman show at iO, she supported herself by working as an operator at 1-800-Dentist while making small one-episode appearances in various sitcoms. She also voiced the character Angela on two episodes of King of the Hill, building the comedy resume that would eventually lead to her big break.
