Angie Harmon Bio

Angela Michelle Harmon, known professionally as Angie Harmon, is an American actress and former model whose career spans more than three decades across television and film. After winning Seventeen magazine’s modeling contest in 1987 at age 15, she signed with IMG Models and appeared on covers for Cosmopolitan and Esquire. She later became a familiar face on television through Baywatch Nights, Law & Order, and the long-running TNT crime drama Rizzoli & Isles, the role that cemented her reputation as a leading dramatic actress.

Across her career, Harmon has balanced prestige television, network procedurals, voice work, and made-for-cable movies. In 2021, she signed a multi-picture development deal with Lifetime, extending her run as one of cable television’s most recognizable stars.

Early Life and Background

Angela Michelle Harmon was born on August 10, 1972, in Dallas, Texas, and raised in the nearby suburb of Highland Park. She is the daughter of Daphne Demar (née Caravageli) and Lawrence Paul “Larry” Harmon, a hospital information network executive in Dallas. Through her father’s side, Harmon has English, Scottish, Welsh, Dutch, German, and Irish ancestry, while her mother is of Greek descent.

Harmon attended Highland Park High School, where she was part of the Highland Belles, finishing her secondary schooling in 1990. During an episode of the genealogical series Who Do You Think You Are?, she discovered a German ancestor who served in George Washington’s army during the American Revolutionary War and later acquired land in Mercer County, Kentucky that remains in her extended family.

Path to Acting

Harmon began her professional life as a child model, winning a Seventeen magazine modeling contest in 1987. Shortly after graduating high school, she also won a Spectrum Model Search contest, which led to runway work for designers including Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, and Donna Karan. Magazine covers for ELLE, Cosmopolitan, and Esquire followed, establishing her as one of the prominent models of the early 1990s.

Her transition to acting came in 1995, when she was discovered on a plane by David Hasselhoff. That introduction led to her first starring role in the mystery drama series Baywatch Nights, alongside parts in the short-lived series C-16: FBI and the 1997 independent film Lawn Dogs.

Angie Harmon Career

Early Career (1995–2001)

Harmon’s first notable starring role was Ryan McBride on Baywatch Nights, which ran from 1995 to 1997. The role introduced her to a wide television audience and positioned her for higher-profile network work.

In 1998, she joined NBC’s Law & Order as Assistant District Attorney Abbie Carmichael, a character she played through 2001. During this period, she also voiced Barbara Gordon in the animated feature Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, taking over the role from Stockard Channing. She left Law & Order to focus on film, telling interviewers she preferred the rhythms of feature work.

Breakthrough (2001–2010)

After her Law & Order run, Harmon took on a steady stream of film and television projects. She appeared in the 2001 direct-to-video feature Good Advice and played a CIA handler opposite Frankie Muniz in Agent Cody Banks (2003). In 2006, she co-starred with Cuba Gooding Jr. and James Woods in the political thriller End Game and appeared as Rose in the Western Seraphim Falls, a film that drew attention for its critical reception.

Television pilots also shaped this stretch of her career. Harmon starred in ABC’s Secrets of a Small Town in 2006 and NBC’s Inconceivable, both of which failed to move forward. In 2007, she landed a starring role in ABC’s Women’s Murder Club as detective Lindsay Boxer; the show aired thirteen episodes. She also played Lindsay Boxer in the short-lived series run and continued working in Lifetime projects, including the biographical special Video Voyeur (2002) and the well-received feature Living Proof (2008). In 2008, she was one of five actresses who posed discreetly nude for the May issue of Allure magazine.

Notable Works and Milestones

From 2010 to 2016, Harmon co-starred with Sasha Alexander on the TNT crime drama Rizzoli & Isles, playing Boston police detective Jane Rizzoli, a role that became her most iconic. The show premiered on July 12, 2010, and Harmon directed its 100th episode, marking a significant milestone in her creative career beyond acting.
