Asher Paul Roth was born on August 11, 1985, and raised in Morrisville, Pennsylvania. He is of Jewish and Scottish ancestry, although he has noted publicly that he does not consider himself Jewish despite his name. His mother, Elizabeth (née McConnell), is a yoga instructor, and his father, David Roth, is the executive director of a design firm. Roth grew up in a household where hip hop was not the dominant soundtrack; his parents favored artists such as The Temptations, Earth, Wind & Fire, Bruce Springsteen, and Dire Straits.
Roth attended Pennsbury High School in Pennsylvania, where he began developing an interest in rap and music. After graduating, he enrolled at West Chester University, where he studied Elementary Education while continuing to record verses over popular hip hop production. His first CD purchase was Dave Matthews Band’s Crash, a detail he has cited to illustrate the suburban environment that shaped his early years.
It was during his time at West Chester University that Roth first started posting his own verses on Myspace. His long-awaited second studio album, RetroHash, arrived on April 22, 2014, through the independent label Federal Prism, debuting at number 45 on the Billboard 200. In 2016, Roth relocated back to Pennsylvania and began collaborating with Rob Deckhart, a reunion that eventually produced his third studio album, Flowers on the Weekend, released in April 2020.
