Becky Hill Bio

Rebecca Claire Hill, known professionally as Becky Hill, is an English singer and songwriter from Bewdley, Worcestershire. Born on 14 February 1994, she first drew public attention when she auditioned for the first series of The Voice UK with John Legend’s “Ordinary People” and went on to reach the semi-finals on Jessie J’s team. Active in music since 2012, she has built a reputation as both a solo artist and a sought-after collaborator in pop and electronic dance music.

Hill made chart history in June 2014 when “Gecko (Overdrive)”, her collaboration with Oliver Heldens, became the first number-one single by a Voice UK contestant. She later released her debut studio album Only Honest on the Weekend in August 2021 and earned Brit Award recognition, winning Best Dance Act in both 2022 and 2023.

Early Life and Background

Becky Hill was born on 14 February 1994 in Bewdley, Worcestershire, England. She began making music at the age of 14, performing in a band called Shaking Trees while still a teenager in the West Midlands. The band drew early industry notice when BBC Introducing’s Andrew Marston at BBC Hereford & Worcester selected them to perform at the Nozstock Festival of Performing Arts.

Through that BBC Introducing platform, Hill and Shaking Trees also recorded a live session for Adam Green and Josh Withey at BBC Radio Shropshire, giving her an early taste of radio promotion. The combination of festival exposure and regional broadcast work helped shape her interest in songwriting and vocal performance during her formative years.

Path to Music

Before her television breakthrough, Hill had already built a foundation of live and online performance. She appeared in a number of live YouTube sessions, including a web series called The Rebelations, which gave her an early audience of listeners online. Her growing profile as an independent performer paved the way for her 2012 audition for The Voice UK.

During the blind auditions, she performed John Legend’s “Ordinary People”, prompting Jessie J and will.i.am, the only coaches with available spaces, to turn their chairs. She chose to join Jessie J’s team. Hill progressed through the battle rounds with a performance of “Irreplaceable” against Indie and Pixie, and reached the live shows before being eliminated at the semi-final stage. The exposure from the series translated quickly into record-label interest and a stream of major collaborations.

Becky Hill Career

Early Career (2012–2014)

Following The Voice UK, Hill moved quickly into featured vocal work. She appeared on Rudimental’s track “Powerless” from their debut album Home and provided vocals for and co-wrote Wilkinson’s “Afterglow”, which peaked at number eight on the UK Singles Chart in October 2013 and topped the UK Dance Chart. She also filled in for Ella Eyre during Rudimental’s festival sets at Glastonbury 2013, Bestival 2013, Wakestock 2013, and Lovebox 2013.

In 2014, Hill co-wrote and performed the vocal version of Oliver Heldens’ “Gecko”, released as “Gecko (Overdrive)” alongside MNEK. The single topped the UK Singles Chart on 29 June 2014, making her the first contestant from The Voice UK to achieve a UK number one. Her first post-Voice solo single, “Losing”, produced by MNEK, was released in November 2014 and debuted at number fifty-six on the UK Singles Chart.

Breakthrough (2015–2019)

Between 2015 and 2017, Hill released a string of collaborations, including “All My Love” with Watermät, “Piece of Me” with MK, “False Alarm” with Matoma, and the singles “Back to My Love”, “Warm”, and “Rude Love”. She signed a worldwide publishing deal with Sony/ATV in May 2017 and released the Eko EP in August 2017 through her own Eko Music Limited label, the final release on that imprint.

In August 2017, she signed a worldwide record deal with Polydor Records. Her 2018 single “Sunrise in the East” served as the lead single from what would become her debut album, and she followed it with collaborations including “Back & Forth” with MK and Jonas Blue, “I Could Get Used to This” with Weiss, and “Wish You Well” with Sigala, the latter becoming her first UK top-ten hit since “Gecko (Overdrive)”. A four-track mini-album, Get to Know, arrived in September 2019, and a cover of Yazoo’s “Only You” followed in December 2019 as a tribute to her grandfather.

2020–2022: Debut Album and Brit Awards

Hill began 2020 supporting The Script on their Sunsets & Full Moons tour in the UK and Ireland, although the remaining dates were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She released singles from her debut album including “Better Off Without You” with Shift K3Y, “Heaven on My Mind” with Sigala, and “My Heart Goes (La Di Da)” with Topic. Her cover of Alphaville’s “Forever Young”, recorded for the UK’s McDonald’s Christmas advert, peaked at number thirty-five on the UK Singles Chart.

Her debut studio album, Only Honest on the Weekend, was released on 27 August 2021. Its singles “Last Time” and “Remember”, both with David Guetta, peaked at number thirty-nine and number three respectively, with “Remember” becoming her fourth UK top-ten hit.
