She first reached a wide audience in 2015 with the single “Ocean Eyes,” written and produced by her older brother, Finneas O’Connell, who has remained her primary collaborator. Billie Eilish has since released Happier Than Ever (2021) and Hit Me Hard and Soft (2024), and she has won two Academy Awards for original songs tied to major films. Known for her oversized fashion aesthetic and outspoken advocacy on environmental and social issues, she has set numerous records as one of the youngest artists ever to top the Billboard charts, headline major music festivals, and sweep the General Field categories at the Grammy Awards.
Early Life and Background
Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell was born in Los Angeles, California, on December 18, 2001. She is the daughter of actress and teacher Maggie Baird and actor Patrick O’Connell, both of whom are also musicians who work on her tours. Of Irish and Scottish descent, Eilish grew up in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles alongside her older brother, Finneas O’Connell, who would become her lifelong creative partner.
Eilish and her brother were homeschooled by their mother, a decision their parents made so the children could pursue their interests. Maggie Baird taught them the basics of songwriting, and the siblings were encouraged to explore art, dance, and acting. Eilish began playing the ukulele at age six, performed at talent shows, and joined the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus at eight. She wrote her first complete song at age 11 for her mother’s songwriting class.
As a child, Eilish took some acting auditions and recorded background dialogue for crowd scenes in films including Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Ramona and Beezus, and the X-Men series. She also trained in dance until a growth plate injury ended that path in 2016, redirecting her focus toward recording music full time.
Path to Music
In 2015, 13-year-old Billie Eilish began working on songs with her brother Finneas, who had been writing and producing for several years. The first songs they recorded together were “She’s Broken” and “Fingers Crossed,” which they uploaded to SoundCloud for fun. That same year, Finneas wrote, produced, and mixed “Ocean Eyes” originally for his own band, the Slightlys, before deciding it suited his sister’s voice. He gave the track to Eilish when her dance teacher, Fred Diaz, asked them to write a song for choreography, and the siblings uploaded it to SoundCloud.
“Ocean Eyes” quickly drew hundreds of thousands of listens, and Finneas’s manager, Danny Rukasin, reached out to discuss Eilish’s potential. In January 2016, she was signed to the A&R company Platoon through Apple Music, and by August 2016, talent scout Justin Lubliner signed her to Darkroom and Interscope Records. Her second single, “Six Feet Under,” followed in 2016, and her debut EP, Don’t Smile at Me, arrived in August 2017, becoming a sleeper hit that introduced her to a global audience.

During this period, Eilish also released the single “Everything I Wanted,” which won Record of the Year at the 63rd Grammy Awards, and the documentary Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry premiered on Apple TV+.
