Cheri Oteri (born September 19, 1962) is an American actress and comedian best known for her five-year tenure as a cast member on NBC’s Saturday Night Live from 1995 to 2000. During her time on the sketch comedy series, Oteri became famous for her high-energy performances, original characters, and spot-on celebrity impressions. She received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 1997 for her work on the show. Cheri Oteri was born on September 19, 1962, in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, to Gaetano Thomas Oteri and Patricia (née Breen). She comes from Italian ancestry through her father. Oteri grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs and moved to Los Angeles at age 25 to pursue opportunities in the entertainment industry.
After relocating to Los Angeles, Oteri worked at A&M Records for four years before eventually finding her calling in comedy. She joined The Groundlings, the acclaimed improv comedy troupe that has launched the careers of numerous successful comedians including Will Ferrell, Melissa McCarthy, and Paul Rudd.
Path to Comedy
Oteri’s path to Saturday Night Live began almost by chance. While performing with The Groundlings, producers of SNL attended a show in 1995 with the intention of auditioning fellow troupe member Chris Kattan.
