Daniel Coulter Reynolds, known professionally as Dan Reynolds, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. He is best known as the lead vocalist and a founding member of the pop rock band Imagine Dragons, which he formed in 2008 while attending Brigham Young University in Utah. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, Reynolds has helped guide the band to international success with multi-platinum albums and chart-topping singles.

Reynolds is a recipient of the Songwriters Hall of Fame Hal David Starlight Award and has earned a Grammy Award along with multiple Billboard Music Awards and iHeartRadio Music Awards. Beyond his work with Imagine Dragons, he has produced other artists, organized the Loveloud festival in support of LGBTQ youth, and spoken publicly about living with ankylosing spondylitis, ulcerative colitis, and depression.

Early Life and Background

Daniel Coulter Reynolds was born on July 14, 1987, in Las Vegas, Nevada, the seventh of nine children born to Ronald Reynolds, a lawyer and author, and Christene M. Reynolds, née Callister. Both of his parents are longtime Nevada residents, and Reynolds is a fourth-generation Nevadan. He grew up in a large family in the Las Vegas Valley and participated in the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout in 2005.

Reynolds attended Bonanza High School in Las Vegas, where he first began performing music and developing his voice as a singer and songwriter. After graduating, he enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and later transferred to Brigham Young University, where he studied communications, marketing, and music. He was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during his youth and served a two-year full-time mission in Nebraska when he was nineteen years old. As of 2024, Reynolds has stated that he no longer practices as a member of the church.

Path to Music

While studying at Brigham Young University, Reynolds committed fully to a professional music career after realizing that he could not pursue any other path. He recruited drummer Andrew Tolman and won BYU’s Battle of the Bands competition with the early lineup of Imagine Dragons. The band soon relocated to Las Vegas, where they performed almost nightly as a lounge act and built a strong regional following.

In 2009, Imagine Dragons landed their first major break when they filled in for the band Train at the Bite of Las Vegas Festival and performed before a crowd of more than 26,000 people. Breakthrough (2012-2014)

Imagine Dragons released their debut studio album, Night Visions, on September 4, 2012. The album was preceded by the single “It’s Time” and went on to chart in the top ten on the U.S. Billboard 200 in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Night Visions won a Billboard Music Award for Top Rock Album and was nominated for a Juno Award for International Album of the Year.

The album’s second single, “Radioactive,” became a global phenomenon. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, set the all-time record for the longest reign atop the Billboard Rock Songs chart with 23 consecutive weeks, and logged 87 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, a record that stood for nearly a decade. With more than 7.5 million digital copies sold in the United States, “Radioactive” is the best-selling rock song in digital history and earned a diamond certification from the RIAA. Rolling Stone later called it “the biggest rock hit of the year.”

Imagine Dragons earned two Grammy Award nominations for “Radioactive,” winning Best Rock Performance. The band also collected two American Music Awards for Favorite Alternative Artist, a Teen Choice Award for Choice Rock Group, a World Music Award for World’s Best Rock Act, and a Billboard Music Award for Top Rock Artist. They made their major festival headlining debut at the Made in America Music Festival in 2014.

Sustained Success (2015-2024)

Imagine Dragons released their second studio album, Smoke + Mirrors, in February 2015. The record debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the UK Albums Chart, and the Canadian Albums Chart, with singles “I Bet My Life” and “Shots” reaching the Billboard Hot 100. The band followed with their third studio album, Evolve, in June 2017, which featured the hit singles “Believer,” “Thunder,” and “Whatever It Takes,” each charting inside the top fifteen of the Billboard Hot 100. In 2018, the band earned two additional Grammy nominations and won the iHeartRadio Music Award for Alternative Rock Artist of the Year.

The group continued releasing major albums, including Origins in 2018, Mercury – Act 1 in 2021, Mercury – Act 2 in 2022, and Loom in 2024. In 2016, Reynolds founded the imprint label Night Street Records under Interscope, signing artists such as K.Flay and later Benson Boone, whose song “Beautiful Things” became the biggest-selling single in the world in 2024. Reynolds and Volkman separated in April 2018, briefly reconciled later that year, and announced another separation in September 2022, with Volkman filing for divorce in April 2023 and the divorce finalized on March 26, 2024.

Reynolds has been in a relationship with actress Minka Kelly since 2022. He has spoken publicly about his long-running battle with ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory disease he disclosed in 2015, and with ulcerative colitis, which he has managed since age 21. Reynolds has also been open about his struggles with depression and therapy, using his platform to encourage open conversations about mental health. He is a practitioner of Brazilian jiu-jitsu and won a bronze medal at a 2023 Jiu-Jitsu World League tournament.
