David James Archuleta is an American pop singer and songwriter who first gained national attention as the Junior Vocal Champion on Star Search and later as the runner-up on American Idol season seven in 2008. Early Life and Background
David James Archuleta was born on December 28, 1990, in Miami, Florida, to Guadalupe Mayorga, a salsa singer and dancer, and Jeff Archuleta, a jazz musician. His mother is from Honduras and his father is of Spanish, Danish, Irish, and German descent. The family moved to the Salt Lake City suburb of Sandy, Utah, when he was six years old. Archuleta has four siblings and speaks fluent Spanish.
Archuleta began singing at the age of six, inspired by a Les Misérables video. “That musical is what started all of this”, he said. He started performing publicly at the age of 10 when he participated in the Utah Talent Competition, singing “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton; he won the Child Division. He attended Murray High School before appearing on American Idol.
Archuleta was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 2008. He is also a graduate of Barbizon Modeling and Acting School in Salt Lake City.

In the finale, Archuleta sang “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me”, “In This Moment” and “Imagine”. From 2015 to 2025, Archuleta resided in Nashville, Tennessee before relocating to Los Angeles, California. When Archuleta was 21, he volunteered for two years as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and was assigned to serve in Chile.
In June 2021, Archuleta came out as a member of the LGBTQ community, describing himself as queer in a November 2022 interview. He had previously been engaged to women multiple times but called off his engagement to his then-fiancée after experiencing an anxiety attack while on a date. In June 2023, Archuleta stated that he is no longer a member of the LDS Church. In 2024, he further clarified his sexuality as gay and demisexual.
