Declan Benedict McKenna (born 24 December 1998) is an English singer-songwriter whose politically charged lyrics and indie-leaning pop-rock sound have made him one of the most distinctive voices of his generation. He first drew widespread attention after winning the Glastonbury Festival Emerging Talent Competition in 2015 and self-releasing the protest single Brazil, a pointed critique of FIFA and the 2014 World Cup. Early Life and Background
Declan Benedict McKenna was born on 24 December 1998 in Enfield, Greater London, and grew up in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. He is the youngest of six siblings in a musically inclined household, an environment he has credited with fostering his early interest in music. His mother was a teacher and his father worked as a milkman, and McKenna is of English and Irish descent, with grandparents from County Cavan and County Cork. Though he no longer considers himself religious, he was raised Catholic.
McKenna attended St Mary’s Church of England High School in Cheshunt, where he began writing songs and performing locally. In the summer of 2015, while still a teenager, he started his GCSE exams and later enrolled in A-level courses in English Literature, Philosophy and Ethics, and Sociology. Path to Music
McKenna’s path into music began in his bedroom, where he taught himself to record demo tracks using basic software. He has cited the American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens as an early influence and described his earliest material as deliberate imitations of that artist. By August 2015 he had posted roughly two albums’ worth of rough recordings on his website before taking them down later that year to focus on more polished releases.
His breakout arrived with the self-released single Brazil, a protest song criticising FIFA for awarding the 2014 World Cup to Brazil while the country wrestled with widespread poverty. The track attracted the attention of more than 40 record labels and led to a management deal with Q Prime and a recording contract with Columbia Records. He followed Brazil with the single Paracetamol, a song addressing the misrepresentation of transgender teenagers in the media, and the EPs Stains and Liar, both of which featured his early singles and helped establish him as a thoughtful new voice in British indie rock.

Early Career (2014–2016)
McKenna began uploading songs to his own YouTube channel in late 2014, releasing an early version of Brazil on 2 December 2014. His April 2015 win at the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition, which came with a £5,000 prize and a slot on the festival’s William’s Green Stage, transformed him into one of the most sought-after new acts in the United Kingdom. NME quickly championed him, and within months he had signed with Q Prime management and Columbia Records.
Between 2015 and 2016 he played a string of British and Irish festivals, including Somersault, Electric Picnic, Mirrors, The Great Escape, Standon Calling, Field Day and the NME Awards, while also making his North American debut at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg, Florida, in March 2016. Breakthrough (2015–2024)
Brazil reached number one on Sirius XM Radio’s Alt Nation Alt 18 Countdown in January 2016 and held that spot for three weeks, eventually peaking at number 16 on the U.S. Billboard Alternative Songs chart. Building on that momentum, McKenna released his debut studio album, What Do You Think About the Car?, on 21 July 2017. Produced by James Ford at a Kensal Green recording studio, the record featured all six of his previously released singles alongside five new tracks, with every song written by McKenna alone except Listen to Your Friends, which was co-written with Rostam Batmanglij. That same year he won the BBC Music Award for BBC Introducing Artist of the Year and played major international festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds.
In August 2019 he released the single British Bombs, a critique of UK foreign policy and the arms trade, before announcing his second album Zeros. Originally set for May 2020, the record was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and released on 4 September 2020. McKenna later followed up with the single My House in July 2021 and the North American Big Return Tour in 2023. His third album, What Happened to the Beach?, arrived on 9 February 2024, preceded by the lead single Sympathy in July 2023.

McKenna is a vegan and a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur F.C., and he has publicly addressed his sexuality by declining to put a fixed label on it, suggesting in a 2020 interview with Attitude that pansexual may come closest to describing how he feels.
