Born in Newport Beach, California, he began his career as a child actor in the 1990s, appearing on Home Improvement and in several commercials. He rose to prominence with Nickelodeon, playing starring roles in the sketch comedy series The Amanda Show (1999–2002), the sitcom Drake & Josh (2004–2007), and the Nickelodeon television film series The Fairly OddParents (2011–2014). He also voiced Peter Parker/Spider-Man on the Disney XD series Ultimate Spider-Man (2012–2017). Bell has released several studio albums including Telegraph (2005), It’s Only Time (2006), and Ready Steady Go! (2014).

Early Life and Background

Drake Bell was born on June 27, 1986, in Orange County, California. He is the youngest of four children born to former professional billiards player Robin Dodson and swimming pool service technician Joe Bell. His parents divorced when he was five years old. Through his father’s family, Bell is the cousin of former San Diego Padres relief pitcher Heath Bell.

While growing up in Orange County, Bell attended the Orange County School of the Arts where he developed his artistic talents. He also enjoyed skateboarding and regularly attended punk rock concerts during his youth, citing that music as an influence on his later musical style. Bell received his GED rather than completing traditional high school.

Path to Celebrity

Bell started acting at the age of five, encouraged by his father who discovered his talent in public speaking and his confidence when impersonating people on television. His first televised commercial was for Whirlpool Appliances, and he later described the experience as enjoyable. His first television appearance came in 1994 on an episode of Home Improvement.

During his early career, Bell appeared in the 1996 film Jerry Maguire and had a small role in the Seinfeld episode “The Frogger” in 1998. In 2000, he was nominated for a Young Artist Award for his role as Cage Redding in the television film The Jack Bull. In July 2021, Bell revealed that he had married his girlfriend of five years and that they had a son together born in 2018. After separating in September 2022, his wife filed for divorce in April 2023 citing irreconcilable differences. Bell has maintained that their priority remains the safety and well-being of their son.

Bell has resided primarily in Mexico City since 2024, where he has recorded his album Non-Stop Flight. He has stated that he feels more at home in Mexico and that many of his friends from Los Angeles have relocated to other states. Bell has been open about his past legal issues, including a 2015 arrest for driving under the influence in Glendale, California, for which he served one day in jail and four years’ probation. In 2021, he pleaded guilty to charges relating to attempted endangering of children and was sentenced to two years’ probation and 200 hours of community service.
