Edward George Skrein was born on 29 March 1983 in the Camden borough of London and grew up in nearby areas including Haringey and Islington. His paternal grandparents were Austrian Jewish refugees from Vienna who moved to England in the 1930s to escape the Nazis, and his grandmother arrived through the Kindertransport programme. He attended Fortismere School in London and then studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art, graduating with a BA in fine art painting.
