Frankie Valli (born Francesco Stephen Castelluccio on May 3, 1934) is an American singer and occasional actor best known as the lead vocalist of the Four Seasons. Renowned for his powerful falsetto voice, Valli has scored numerous top-40 hits both with the Four Seasons and as a solo artist, including the number-one singles “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Rag Doll,” “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night),” “My Eyes Adored You,” and “Grease.” His professional career began in 1951 and has spanned decades of recordings, stage and screen appearances, and continued touring. Early Life and Background

Frankie Valli was born Francesco Stephen Castelluccio on May 3, 1934, in Newark, New Jersey, the eldest of three sons in an Italian American family. His father, Antonio (Anthony) Castelluccio, had immigrated to the United States from Faiano in the Campania region of Italy and worked as a barber and a display designer for Lionel model trains. His mother, Mary Rinaldi, originally from Avigliano in the Basilicata region, was a homemaker and a beer-company employee who raised the family in Newark.

Valli’s interest in singing began at age seven, when his mother took him to see Frank Sinatra perform at the Paramount Theater in Manhattan, an experience that inspired him to pursue a career as a vocalist. Among his early favorite singers was a female hillbilly artist known as “Texas” Jean Valli, from whom he later adopted his stage surname. While building his music career, Valli also worked as a barber in his father’s shop until he could support himself full-time through singing.

Path to Music

Valli began his singing career in 1951 with the Variety Trio, a group that included Nickie DeVito, Tommy DeVito, and Henry “Hank” Majewski, and he was mentored in his early years by Nick Macioci and by “Texas” Jean Valli. According to Valli, Jean introduced him to music publishers Paul and Dave Kapp as her brother, which led to his first single being credited to “Frankie Valley.” He later adjusted the spelling to “Valli” to match the name of the singer who had inspired him.

After the Variety Trio disbanded in late 1952, Valli and Tommy DeVito joined the house band at the Strand in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where Valli played bass and sang. In 1953, he recorded his first single, “My Mother’s Eyes,” a cover of a 1929 George Jessel song, and shortly afterward the group reorganized as the Variatones. In 1956, they caught the attention of New York recording agent Peter Paul, who secured them an audition at RCA Victor and helped rename the group the Four Lovers.

Early Career (1951-1961)

As the Four Lovers, the group recorded several singles and an album’s worth of tracks, scoring a minor hit with “You’re the Apple of My Eye” in 1956 and earning their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. After two years without further success, Tommy DeVito dismissed his brother and Majewski, and the group continued with a rotating lineup that at various times included Nick Macioci, Charles Calello, and Hugh Garrity. In 1959, songwriter Bob Gaudio was introduced to the group by mutual friend Joe Pesci at a gig in Baltimore and became a member.

By 1960, the lineup of Valli, DeVito, Gaudio, and a now-renamed Nick Massi had adopted the name “The 4 Seasons,” reportedly taken from a Union, New Jersey, bowling alley that had rejected them after an audition. Valli recorded under numerous stage names during this period, performing session work and building the regional following that would soon support a national breakthrough.

Breakthrough (1962-1978)

In 1962, Valli and Gaudio agreed on a side deal splitting their future earnings, and the Four Seasons soon became one of the most successful American pop acts of the era. Valli’s string of number-one hits with the group began with “Sherry” in 1962 and continued with “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Rag Doll” in 1964, and “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” in 1975. Valli’s solo recording of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” reached number two in 1967, demonstrating his ability to thrive outside the group as well.

As a solo artist, Valli topped the Billboard Hot 100 with “My Eyes Adored You” in 1974 and again with “Grease,” the title song for the 1978 film adaptation of the stage play, written by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees. During the 1970s, he also enjoyed international success in the United Kingdom, with “You’re Ready Now” reaching number eleven in 1970, “The Night” reaching number seven in 1975, and “My Eyes Adored You” reaching number five. By the end of the decade, Valli had begun suffering from otosclerosis, a condition that required surgery in 1980 to restore most of his hearing.
