Glen Powell Bio
Glen Thomas Powell Jr. (born October 21, 1988) is an American actor. He began his career with small roles on television and in films including Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003) and Fast Food Nation (2006). Powell gained wide recognition with his performance in the action film Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and the romantic comedy Anyone but You (2023), establishing himself as a leading man in Hollywood. He is also a producer and screenwriter who co-wrote the dark comedy Hit Man (2023) with director Richard Linklater.
Early Life and Background
Glen Thomas Powell Jr. was born on October 21, 1988 in Austin, Texas to Glen Powell Sr., an executive coach, and Cyndy Powell, a homemaker. He has two sisters and grew up in Austin, where he attended Westwood High School, graduating in 2007. At Westwood, Powell played football and lacrosse, developing the athletic background that would later surface in several of his film roles.
After high school, Powell enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin (UT), where he later described his first year on campus as “the greatest year of my entire life.” As a Radio-Television-Film student in UT’s Moody College of Communication, Powell joined the university’s Semester in Los Angeles program, which gave him hands-on experience through internships and classes taught by working professionals. Although he initially moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting, he returned to UT to finish his degree and, as of 2025, remains enrolled with an expected graduation date of May 2027.
Path to Acting
Powell’s acting career started early. As a teenager, he appeared in Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003), working alongside Antonio Banderas and Sylvester Stallone. He later landed small roles in The Wendell Baker Story (2005) and Richard Linklater’s Fast Food Nation (2006), gaining on-set experience while still a student. In 2007, before his first year of college, he booked a role in The Great Debaters, directed by and starring Denzel Washington.
Washington introduced Powell to talent agent Ed Limato, who encouraged the young actor to move to Los Angeles. After relocating, Powell stayed with a family friend and weathered a difficult stretch of failed auditions, including attempts at Friday Night Lights, Cowboys & Aliens, and The Longest Ride. He built his resume with small television credits on shows such as Into the West, Jack & Bobby, CSI: Miami, NCIS, Without a Trace, Rizzoli & Isles, and The Lying Game, while also picking up minor parts in major films like The Dark Knight Rises and Stuck in Love.
Glen Powell Career
Early Career (2003–2017)
Powell’s first major feature was a small role in The Great Debaters, where working with Denzel Washington became a turning point in his professional life. He followed that with a series of television appearances and small film parts, including a part in the blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises. Director Christopher Nolan’s decision to cast him in that film was, in Powell’s own words, a moment of validation at a time when “nothing was going on” in his career.
Around 2014, Powell began landing larger feature roles. He played a hacker in The Expendables 3, reuniting with Stallone and Banderas, and took minor parts in the comedies Sex Ed and Ride Along 2. He also joined the cast of the Fox horror-comedy series Scream Queens, first as a main cast member and then as a recurring player. In March 2016, he co-starred as Finnegan in Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!!, a spiritual sequel to Dazed & Confused that was filmed in Austin and released by Paramount. Later that year, he portrayed astronaut John Glenn in the biographical drama Hidden Figures, a high-profile role that raised his profile considerably.
Breakthrough (2018–2022)
In 2018, Powell co-starred opposite Zoey Deutch in the Netflix romantic comedy Set It Up, a performance that drew strong reviews and brought him wider attention. Industry contacts began reaching out after the film’s release, and critics took notice of his on-screen presence. That same year, he joined the cast of Top Gun: Maverick, initially auditioning for the role of Rooster Bradshaw before being offered the part of Jake “Hangman” Seresin. A personal call from star Tom Cruise convinced Powell to accept the role and shaped the character’s arc. When the film finally opened in May 2022 after pandemic-related delays, his performance became widely described as his breakout.
Powell followed Top Gun: Maverick with a voice role in Linklater’s animated film Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood and the lead role of naval officer Tom Hudner in the biographical war film Devotion, which he also executive produced. Released in November 2022, Devotion earned positive reviews but struggled at the box office. These roles cemented Powell’s reputation as a versatile performer willing to take on dramatic material.
In 2023, Powell co-starred opposite Sydney Sweeney in the romantic comedy Anyone but You, a sleeper hit that grossed roughly $220 million worldwide. The film’s press tour generated widespread speculation about a real-life romance between the two stars, which Powell later confirmed was partly a marketing strategy. He also co-wrote and produced Hit Man with director Richard Linklater. After premiering at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival and being released on Netflix in June 2024, Hit Man was widely praised, with The New York Times calling Powell’s performance a “genuine star-clinching turn” and Empire describing it as the moment he “announces himself as a movie star and a filmmaking force to be reckoned with.”
