Early Life and Background

Thomas Grant Gustin was born on January 14, 1990, in Norfolk, Virginia, United States. He is the son of Tina Haney, a pediatric nurse, and Thomas Gustin, a college professor. Growing up in Norfolk gave him early access to regional arts programs that shaped his interest in performance.

During his high school years, Gustin attended the Governor’s School for the Arts program in Norfolk, where he studied musical theater. He also participated with Hurrah Players Incorporated, a theater organization based in Virginia that introduced him to stage work at a young age. These formative experiences encouraged his interest in acting and singing.

In 2008, Gustin graduated from Granby High School and went on to enroll in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Music Theater Program at Elon University in North Carolina, where he studied for two years. While at Elon, he became close friends with actor Chris Wood, a friendship that began during their college years.

Path to Acting

Gustin’s first known screen role came while he was still in high school, with the 2004 student film Rain, directed and produced by Neil Grochmal during studies at Regent University. In the film, Gustin played a young mute who dreams of a man’s tragic loss of his wife in a robbery and later crosses paths with the man, stirring visions that help him solve the mystery of who murdered his wife. Grochmal later recalled that Gustin showed raw talent and figured the youngster would become a future achiever in acting.

In 2010, Gustin left Elon University to take the role of Baby John in the Broadway Revival Tour of West Side Story. He performed with the tour from its opening on September 30, 2010, through September 23, 2011, building his stage experience and national exposure. His final West Side Story performance fell on a Friday night in late September 2011, just days before he began filming his next television project.

Early Career (2011–2013)

On November 8, 2011, Gustin debuted on the Fox television series Glee as Sebastian Smythe, an openly gay member of the Dalton Academy Warblers. He won the recurring role after a weeks-long casting search; he had originally auditioned for a background tap dancer role and did not get it, but showrunner Ryan Murphy kept him in mind for future casting. Gustin began filming the role early on Monday, September 26, 2011, immediately after finishing his last West Side Story performance the previous Friday night.

He was initially scheduled to appear in three episodes, with the last one serving as a backdoor pilot for a potential spin-off series. However, the backdoor pilot plan was replaced by a standalone pilot, simply titled The Flash. The CW picked up the pilot with an initial order of thirteen episodes, and The Flash premiered on October 7, 2014, drawing 4.8 million viewers and becoming the network’s most-watched premiere in five years.

Across nine seasons and 184 episodes, Gustin portrayed Barry Allen, the Scarlet Speedster known as The Flash, until the series concluded on May 24, 2023. As part of the wider Arrowverse shared universe, he reprised the role of Barry Allen on Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman, and also appeared in the animated web series Vixen. His work on The Flash cemented him as a leading television actor of his generation.
