Ja Rule Early Life and Background
Early Life and Background
Jeffrey Bruce Atkins was born on February 29, 1976, in Hollis, a section of the Queens borough of New York City. His father left the family when he was very young, and Atkins was raised as an only child after his younger sister, Kristen, died before birth. His mother, Debra, worked in healthcare, and the long hours of her job meant that Atkins was largely raised by his grandparents as a Jehovah’s Witness during his early years.
Atkins’s mother left the Jehovah’s Witness religion when he was twelve and was shunned by her former congregation, including her own parents, meaning she could no longer see her son. Atkins chose to live with his mother even if it meant financial struggle, and not long after, he began selling drugs in Hollis. This street-level hustle shaped his teenage years and later informed the lyrical edge that defined much of his music.
Path to Rapper
Ja Rule began his rap career in 1994 with the hip hop group Cash Money Click alongside members Chris Black and O-1. He took the stage name “Ja Rule” after a friend who addressed him by that name, and the group worked with producer DJ Irv (later known as Irv Gotti) to release a number of tracks. Their debut single “Get Tha Fortune” was released independently in 1994, and after signing with TVT Records, the song was re-released as the B-side to “4 My Click.”
Plans for a Cash Money Click debut album collapsed in 1995 after Chris Black was sentenced to prison and the group was dropped by TVT. With no label, Cash Money Click disbanded, but Ja Rule maintained a close relationship with DJ Irv, who by then was working at Def Jam Recordings. Gotti was later granted his own imprint, Murder Inc. Records, and Ja Rule became its flagship artist, signing his first major solo contract.
Ja Rule Career
Early Career (1994–1999)
After signing with Murder Inc. Records in the late 1990s, Ja Rule made his first solo appearance on Mic Geronimo’s “Time to Build” in 1995 alongside Jay-Z and DMX. He continued building buzz through guest verses on tracks by Method Man, Redman, Nas, DMX, LL Cool J, and Dru Hill, and notably wrote the hook for Jay-Z’s 1998 hit single “Can I Get A…” His debut single “Holla Holla” was released in March 1999 and peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100, setting the stage for his debut album.
Venni Vetti Vecci was released in 1999, debuting at number 3 on the Billboard 200 with 184,000 copies sold in its first week and eventually earning platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The success of “Holla Holla” established Ja Rule as a commercial force and laid the foundation for the chart-topping albums that followed.
Breakthrough (2000–2002)
Ja Rule’s second album, Rule 3:36, was released on October 10, 2000, and marked a stylistic shift toward pop-rap. It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 with 276,000 copies sold in its first week and went on to receive triple platinum certification. The single “Put It on Me,” featuring Vita and Lil’ Mo, became one of the biggest hits of 2001, reaching number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the MTV Video Countdown.
The breakthrough continued with Pain Is Love, released on October 2, 2001, which also topped the Billboard 200 with 361,000 first-week sales and was certified triple platinum by the RIAA. The album produced three top-10 singles, including “Livin’ It Up” featuring Case, and “Always on Time” featuring Ashanti, which became Ja Rule and Ashanti’s first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Ja Rule also remixed Jennifer Lopez’s “I’m Real,” which spent five non-consecutive weeks atop the Hot 100.
His fourth album, The Last Temptation, was released on November 19, 2002, debuting at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and earning platinum certification. It spawned the hit “Mesmerize,” a duet with Ashanti that peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Across 2000 to 2002, Ja Rule became one of the most successful rappers in the United States, helping to make Murder Inc. one of the biggest labels in the country.
