McLaughlin, who is of Irish descent, and Rebecca Kay De Victoria, who has Cheyenne and Irish ancestry. After completing high school, McLaughlin moved to Southern California and obtained a GED from North Hollywood High School in Los Angeles. His upbringing in both Northern and Southern California exposed him to diverse environments that would later influence his approach to his craft.

In 2002, McLaughlin joined the United States Army as a Dismount Infantry Squad Automatic Weapon Gunner.
