Jameela Alia Jamil was born on 25 February 1986 in London, England, to Ali Jamil and Shireen Jamil. She is of Pakistani descent on her mother’s side and Indian descent on her father’s side. Jamil grew up moving between several London neighborhoods, including Dulwich, Croydon, Camden, Belsize Park, Swiss Cottage, and Hampstead, and also spent time in Spain and Pakistan with each of her grandmothers.
As a child, Jamil was born with congenital hearing loss and labyrinthitis, conditions that required several operations and left her with partial hearing in both ears. At the age of nine, she was diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder, and at twelve she was diagnosed with coeliac disease.
