Jennifer Nettles Bio
Jennifer Odessa Nettles (born September 12, 1974) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. She is best known as the lead vocalist of the country music duo Sugarland, alongside Kristian Bush, a partnership that has produced multiple platinum albums and chart-topping singles. Nettles has also built a respected solo career and has expanded her artistic reach into acting on television, in film, and on Broadway.
Throughout her career, Nettles has won three Grammy Awards, four Country Music Association Awards, and an American Music Award. Beyond music, she is recognized for her philanthropic efforts and her vocal advocacy for gender parity in country radio. She was honored with the first CMT Equal Play Award in 2020 for that activism.
Early Life and Background
Jennifer Odessa Nettles was born and raised in the small town of Douglas, Georgia. She graduated from Coffee High School in her hometown before continuing her education at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, where she studied Spanish and Anthropology and graduated in 1997. Her Southern upbringing and small-town roots would later inform the storytelling sensibility that defines much of her songwriting.
From an early age, Nettles found her voice in performance. She sang at school assemblies, performed at her Southern Baptist church, and appeared in community theater productions. While attending Agnes Scott College, Nettles met Cory Jones, a classical guitar student at the University of Georgia, and together they formed the acoustic duo Soul Miner’s Daughter. The group released two albums, The Sacred and Profane in 1996 and Hallelujah in 1998, both composed of songs co-written by Nettles and Jones. In 1999, Soul Miner’s Daughter was invited to perform at the Atlanta installment of the Lilith Fair festival, giving Nettles one of her first major public showcases.
In 1999, Nettles formed the Jennifer Nettles Band, a fuller group that included Brad Sikes on drums, Scott Nicholson on piano, Wesley Lupold on bass, and Mike Cebulski on percussion. Early Career (1991–2002)
Nettles began her professional career in 1991, performing regionally while still in her teens. Her work with Soul Miner’s Daughter in the mid-1990s gave her early recording experience, and the duo’s two independently released albums demonstrated her emerging talent as a lyricist and vocalist. These formative years allowed her to refine her craft in front of live audiences across the Southeast.
The launch of the Jennifer Nettles Band in 1999 marked her first major step toward a wider audience. After a five-year hiatus during which both members pursued solo projects, Sugarland reunited in 2017 at the 51st Annual Country Music Association Awards. Nettles, meanwhile, had already launched a solo career with the release of her single That Girl in 2013 and her album of the same name in 2014, which was produced with Rick Rubin. She also served as a judge on the ABC singing competition series Duets in 2012 and signed with Big Machine Label Group in 2015.
Nettles expanded into acting during this period. In February 2015, she joined the Broadway cast of Chicago as Roxie Hart for a limited engagement. In December 2015, she made her television acting debut in the NBC movie Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors, portraying Dolly Parton’s mother, a role she reprised in the 2016 sequel. Since 2019, she has appeared on HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones as Aimee-Leigh Gemstone, and she played the lead role of Jenna in the Broadway musical Waitress in late 2021. The couple announced in June 2012 that they were expecting their first child, and their son was born in December 2012. Nettles and Miller divorced in 2018.
