Early Life and Background
James Ross Meskimen was born on September 10, 1959, in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in the Woodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. He is the son of Marion Ross and Freeman Meskimen, both of whom came from artistic backgrounds that helped shape his early creative interests. He attended Taft High School in Woodland Hills, where he drew cartoons for the school newspaper and appeared in school plays, discovering an early love for both visual art and performance.
After graduating from high school, Meskimen enrolled at the University of California at Santa Cruz to study general subjects alongside painting, drawing, and lithography. During his college years, he took five art history courses under professor Jasper Rose, studied painting with Mexican muralist Eduardo Carrillo, and trained in sculpture with Hardy Hanson. Between terms at UCSC, he spent time in Galicia, Spain, beginning an intensive period of classical painting study under a mentor named Argüello, an experience that deepened his grounding as a visual artist.
Path to Celebrity
Meskimen’s pivot from visual art to professional entertainment began during a 1982 trip back to Spain, followed by a stay in Madrid in 1983. After a chance encounter with actor Harvey Keitel, he decided to pursue acting and relocated to New York City. To support himself, he worked as a commercial illustrator and cartoonist while also taking on radio and television commercial voiceover work, soon becoming a series regular on the animated show The Comic Strip produced by Rankin/Bass.
Throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s, Meskimen became a familiar voice on radio and television campaigns for major brands, including Skaggs Alfa Beta grocery stores, Swatch Watch, and Comedy Central’s predecessor channel, HA!, where he created the character Doctor Swatch. He studied and performed improv with companies such as INTERPLAY at the National Improvisational Theatre on Eighth Avenue in Chelsea, and he and fellow Interplay member Christopher Smith guest starred on the British series Whose Line Is It Anyway?.
Jim Meskimen Career
Early Career (1984-1992)
Meskimen began building his on-screen résumé in the mid-1980s after moving to New York, working as a man-on-the-street interviewer for banks, retailers, and food chains such as Schnucks Markets, Food Lion, and Kash & Karry. These spontaneous, off-the-cuff comedic campaigns earned him dozens of industry awards and helped him sharpen his timing and character work. By the late 1980s, he had also become a recognizable voice behind several major brand campaigns.
In 1992, he voiced the Genie in a Disney Aladdin franchise production, planting a flag in feature animation voice work. He also contributed to early JibJab Media hits, voicing characters in viral pieces such as Arnold for President, This Land, and Second Term, after meeting founders Gregg and Evan Spiridellis in early 2003. His first feature film role came shortly after with a part in Ron Howard’s 1994 comedy-drama The Paper, starring Michael Keaton, marking the start of a long collaboration with the Oscar-winning director.

Almost immediately he landed a guest role on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air as Professor Jeremy Mansfield, a character loosely modeled after Robin Williams’ role in the film Dead Poets Society. That same period brought him a part in Ron Howard’s Oscar-nominated Apollo 13, and Howard went on to cast Meskimen in no fewer than five feature films.
Among those Howard collaborations were Ron Howard’s The Grinch in 2000 and the critically acclaimed drama Frost/Nixon in 2008. He also booked recurring and guest spots on hit series including Friends, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Young Sheldon, The Big Bang Theory, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, This Is Us, NCIS, SWAT, and Hunters. His voice became a fixture in animation and gaming through Star Trek: Resurgence, Marvel Avengers Assemble, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Pinky and the Brain, Phineas and Ferb, The Legend of Korra, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, before officially taking over the role of the Genie in Disney’s Aladdin franchise from 2008 onward.
