Early Life and Background
John Michael Montgomery was born on January 20, 1965, in Danville, Kentucky, the second of three children of Harold and Carol Montgomery. The family later settled in nearby Nicholasville, where his father, Harold, worked as a local musician playing at honky-tonks across Kentucky. Harold taught his son to play guitar at an early age, instilling a love of country music that would shape Montgomery’s career. By the age of 15, Montgomery was playing rhythm guitar in his father’s band, Harold Montgomery and the Kentucky River Express, which his younger brother Eddie later joined as well.
During his senior year of high school, Montgomery worked stocking frozen food at a local grocery store and lived with his grandmother after her husband died. These circumstances led him to miss more than 70 days of school, and he ultimately dropped out before completing his education through the General Educational Development (GED) program. Following their parents’ divorce, John Michael and Eddie founded another group called Early Tymz, also known as John Michael Montgomery and Young Country, which secured a regular performing gig at Austin City Saloon in Lexington, Kentucky.

While performing with Early Tymz, Montgomery shared an apartment with his brother and worked at a liquor store to make ends meet. In 1990, he performed a solo show at the Congress Inn, another bar in Lexington, where he was discovered by music manager Estill Sowards. Sowards made contact with representatives of the Nashville division of Atlantic Records, who also attended the Congress Inn to hear his performances. He continued to tour and perform throughout the 2010s and early 2020s before announcing his retirement from touring in January 2024.
