He was the middle son of Katherine Florence, whose parents traced their roots to Aragona, Sicily, Italy, and Nicholas Turturro, an Italian immigrant who arrived in the United States at age six and later worked as a carpenter, construction worker, and naval serviceman. His mother was an amateur jazz singer who had worked in a naval yard during World War II.
When he was six years old, his family moved to the Rosedale section of Queens, New York, where he was raised in a Catholic household. After completing his studies, he graduated from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in theater studies. He later attended the Yale School of Drama, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1983.
