Jordan Knight Bio
Jordan Nathaniel Marcel Knight (born May 17, 1970) is an American pop singer and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist of the boy band New Kids on the Block. He is recognized for a falsetto singing style influenced by The Stylistics, and he rose to fame with the group in the late 1980s and early 1990s. After the band initially disbanded in 1994, Knight launched a solo recording career that produced several charting albums and singles.
He has also built a public profile through reality television and as a music industry collaborator. With New Kids on the Block, he has contributed to worldwide sales exceeding 80 million records, and as a solo artist he has sold over 1.5 million records. Knight continues to perform and release music as part of both his solo work and the reunited group.
Early Life and Background
Jordan Nathaniel Marcel Knight was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, the youngest of six children. His parents are Canadian, and Knight holds dual American and Canadian citizenship. His father, Allan Knight, is an Episcopal priest originally from Meaford, Ontario, and his mother, Marlene Knight, née Putnam, is from Dunnville, Ontario. The family is of English, Scottish, and German descent.
Before achieving fame, Knight played in a youth baseball league in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He grew up in a musical household and began learning instruments on his own as a teenager. Over time, he taught himself piano and keyboard, an early step that would later shape his songwriting.
In 1984, when he was almost 14 years old, Knight joined New Kids on the Block, a group assembled in Boston by producer Maurice Starr. His bandmates included his older brother Jonathan Knight, as well as Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood. The group’s formation marked the formal beginning of his professional music career.
Path to Music
Knight’s path into the recording industry began with his recruitment into New Kids on the Block in 1984. The group was built around pop, dance, and R&B influences, with Knight positioned as the lead vocalist. Despite his youth, he quickly became a central voice in the band’s sound, learning how to work with producers, perform on stage, and develop a stage presence suited to large audiences.
As the group toured and recorded, Knight began writing original songs. Producer Maurice Starr, who wrote much of the group’s material, was initially reluctant to include Knight’s compositions in the band’s repertoire. Knight continued to write on his own and to develop his instrumental skills during this period, building a foundation for future solo work.
A formative moment came in 1989, when Knight met singer Tommy Page while the band was on tour. Knight played Page a verse from what would become the song “I’ll Be Your Everything,” which he had originally intended to save for a future solo project. The two collaborated on the track, and Page released it as a single in 1990. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, marking an important early songwriting credit for Knight.
Jordan Knight Career
Early Career (1984–1994)
Knight’s early career was defined by his work with New Kids on the Block. The group became one of the most successful boy bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s, generating multiple hit singles, albums, and large-scale tours. Knight served as a lead vocalist and later contributed as a songwriter and co-producer on material recorded by other artists, including his work with Tommy Page.
The group originally disbanded in 1994, concluding a decade of work that had made its members international pop stars. By the time of the breakup, New Kids on the Block had sold over 80 million records worldwide and had paved the way for later boy bands such as the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. The split opened the door for Knight to pursue a solo recording career.
Breakthrough (1999–Present)
Knight made a comeback in 1999 with the release of his solo single “Give It to You,” produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The track reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 35 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, was certified gold, and earned a nomination for the 1999 MTV Video Music Award for Best Dance Video. He was also nominated for Favorite Male Singer at the 2000 Kids’ Choice Awards. He continued his solo output with a remix album, Jordan Knight Performs New Kids on the Block: The Remix Album, in 2004, followed by the EP The Fix in 2005 and the album Love Songs in 2006. The Love Songs single “Say Goodbye,” a duet with Deborah Gibson, peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. On May 31, 2011, Knight released his third solo album, Unfinished, which reached No. 48 on the Billboard 200 and No. 8 on the US Billboard Independent Albums chart. In 2014, he teamed with Nick Carter for the collaborative album Nick & Knight, followed by a fall tour.
Parallel to his solo work, New Kids on the Block reunited in 2008, scoring two top 40 hits and launching a successful tour. In fall 2010, the group teamed with the Backstreet Boys to form NKOTBSB, and the combined act toured in summer 2011. Knight also expanded into television, appearing as a judge on American Juniors, VH1’s The Surreal Life in 2004 and The Surreal Life: Fame Games in 2007, the British program Hit Me Baby One More Time in 2005, the Five documentary Trust Me – I’m a Holiday Rep in 2005, the game show Identity, and the CBC program Cover Me Canada in 2011.
