Kristopher Neil Allen (born June 21, 1985) is an American singer and songwriter best known for winning the eighth season of American Idol in 2009. A native of Jacksonville, Arkansas, he began performing in local venues while in college and self-released his debut album, Brand New Shoes, in 2007. After his Idol victory, Allen released a self-titled major-label album in 2009 whose lead single, “Live Like We’re Dying,” reached the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. He has since built a varied catalog that includes Thank You Camellia (2012), Horizons (2014) and Letting You In (2016), while remaining active in music education and humanitarian causes.
Early Life and Background
Kristopher Neil Allen was born in Jacksonville, Arkansas, to Kimberly (née Wood) and Neil Allen. He is the elder of two sons, and his younger brother, Daniel, later became a college cheerleading coach. Allen’s interest in music began in elementary school, when he started playing the viola. He continued with the instrument in the orchestra at Mills University Studies High School and earned a place in the Arkansas all-state orchestra.
Beyond the viola, Allen taught himself to play the guitar at age 13 and also took up the piano. His early musical influences included the Beatles, Jamie Cullum, Jason Mraz, Pat Monahan, John Mayer and Michael Jackson. After graduating from Mills University Studies High School, he moved to Conway, Arkansas, to attend the University of Central Arkansas, where he studied business and joined Chi Alpha campus ministries.
Path to Music
During college, Allen began performing in local bars and venues around Conway, Little Rock and Fayetteville. He dropped out in the middle of his junior year to pursue music professionally, working as a shoe salesman at a sporting goods store to support himself. In 2007, he wrote, produced and self-released an album called Brand New Shoes with college friends Michael Holmes on drums and Chase Erwin on bass. The album was a small-run project of about 600 copies, most of which were given to family and friends.
Before auditioning for American Idol, Allen participated in Christian missionary work in countries including Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, South Africa, Spain and Thailand. He also served as a worship leader for New Life Church in Conway and Little Rock, as well as for the Chi Alpha campus ministry. He later described his decision to audition for Idol as a “last hurrah” before giving up on a music career.
Kris Allen Career
Early Career (2007–2008)
Allen’s earliest recorded work was Brand New Shoes, a self-released 2007 album he made with college bandmates. The album served as a calling card at small live shows across central Arkansas, where he also opened for earlier Idol contestant Sean Michel on multiple occasions. He continued writing new material and refining his folk-inflected pop-rock approach in the years that followed.
In this period Allen also balanced music with day jobs and church worship leading, gradually building a regional following. His growing catalog of original songs and covers helped convince him to try out for American Idol alongside his brother Daniel and friends including Cale Mills, Robbie Busick and Andee Walker.
Breakthrough (2009)
Allen auditioned for the eighth season of American Idol in Louisville, Kentucky, with his brother Daniel, who did not advance to Hollywood week. After navigating the early rounds, he impressed judges with folk-inspired arrangements of modern pop songs, playing acoustic guitar, electric guitar, keyboard and piano throughout the competition. Strong performances of “To Make You Feel My Love,” “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Falling Slowly,” “She Works Hard for the Money” and an acoustic take on Kanye West’s “Heartless” pushed him into the finale.
On May 20, 2009, Kris Allen was declared the winner of the eighth season of American Idol, becoming the first married contestant to claim the title. His coronation single, “No Boundaries,” debuted at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and his version of “Heartless” entered at number 16. Following the finale, he signed a record deal with Jive Records and released his self-titled major-label debut, Kris Allen, on November 17, 2009. The album debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200, and its lead single, “Live Like We’re Dying,” peaked at number 18 on the Hot 100, eventually achieving platinum status with combined sales of more than 1.7 million.
