Early Life and Background
Daniel Lawrence Whitney was born in Pawnee City, Nebraska, to Tom and Shirley Whitney. He grew up on an 80-acre farm outside Pawnee City, where his father worked as a Christian minister. When he was 16 years old, his family moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, where his father took a position as an elementary school principal.
Whitney attended The King’s Academy in West Palm Beach during the late 1970s and into 1980, and he graduated from Berean Christian School in West Palm Beach in 1982, where he played football. He later attended Baptist University of America in Georgia, and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he majored in drama and speech. Whitney has credited his college roommates from Texas and Georgia for inspiring his famous Southern accent impression.
Path to Celebrity
Whitney began his comedy career in the early 1990s while still based in Nebraska. He made regular radio appearances on nationally syndicated programs such as The Ron and Ron Show, The Bob and Tom Show, and other regional morning shows across the country. He also worked as a frequent guest on The Johnny Dare Morning Show in Kansas City, Missouri, and on stations in Orlando, Florida, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Baltimore, Maryland.
Initially performing stand-up under his real name with limited success, Whitney became famous after developing the Cable Guy character, a personality he has maintained throughout his stage act. The Cable Guy character has a stereotypical redneck appearance, a thick Southern accent, and uses the catchphrase Git-R-Done. Whitney has said in interviews that he deliberately turns the accent on and off, since he might lose it if he kept the persona on all the time.
