Jonathan H. Smith (born 17 January 1971), known professionally as Lil Jon, is an American rapper, record producer, disc jockey, and entrepreneur. Regarded as a progenitor of crunk, his production style and vocal presence helped bring the club-oriented hip-hop subgenre to mainstream attention in the early 2000s. He served as frontman of Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz, releasing multiple albums and hit singles, and later established a successful solo career that includes the album Crunk Rock (2010) and the international electronic single “Turn Down for What” (2013). Lil Jon has produced and been credited on numerous charting songs, won a Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Performance, and remains active as a performer, producer, and entrepreneur. He resides in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.
Early Life and Background
Jonathan H. Smith was born on 17 January 1971 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, and raised in Southwest Atlanta. He is the oldest of five children. His father was an aerospace engineer with former military service, and his mother had a medical career within the military. Three of his siblings later followed their parents’ lead and served in the United States military.
Smith attended Beecher Hills Elementary School and Southwest Middle School, both within the Atlanta Public Schools district. His mother described him as a high achiever who was independent and a passionate reader. While in middle school, he became lifelong friends with Robert McDowell, Dwayne “Emperor” Searcy, and Vince Phillips, who would later become his business partners. The group became immersed in Atlanta’s skateboarding culture and worked at Skate Escape, a popular skate and bicycle shop near Piedmont Park. While his best friends attended Benjamin E. Mays High School, Smith attended Frederick Douglass High School for its magnet program and was a member of the marching band.
Path to Music
At the age of 15, Smith taught himself how to DJ. Although his parents were strict, they allowed him to host house parties in the basement of the family home, citing that they preferred him to be under their watch. The parties, hosted by Smith and Searcy, became popular with local teens. In addition to working at the skate shop, Smith began spinning at house parties and working in local dance clubs as a DJ, eventually becoming an in-house DJ at Phoenix, a popular Atlanta nightclub. It was there that he met established music artists such as Jermaine Dupri, TLC, the Notorious B.I.G., Craig Mack, and Mary J. Blige.
After graduating from high school, Lil Jon continued to work as a DJ in popular downtown Atlanta clubs. He met Jermaine Dupri, who hired him as an A&R representative to lead the Atlanta-based record label So So Def Recordings. Lil Jon was later promoted to Executive Vice President of A&R and recruited DJ Smurf, Shawty Redd, Raheem the Dream, and Playa Poncho to create the compilation album series So So Def Bass All-Stars, with the first installment released on 12 May 1996.
Lil Jon Career
Early Career (1991-2000)
Lil Jon’s first major project was the So So Def Bass All-Stars compilation, released on 12 May 1996, which sold over 500,000 units and was certified gold by the RIAA on 19 September 1996. The album included the hit single “My Boo” by Ghost Town DJ’s, later sampled by Ciara in her 2013 single “Body Party”. He completed the series with So So Def Bass All-Stars Vol. II in 1997 and Vol. III in 1998. Alongside his label commitments, he worked as a radio personality and DJ on Atlanta station V-103.
In 1995, Lil Jon collaborated with Big Sam and Lil’ Bo to form the rap group Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz. The group released their debut single “Who U Wit?” in 1996, a track credited with bringing the term “crunk” into hip-hop currency. Their 1997 debut album Get Crunk, Who U Wit: Da Album produced charting singles, and in 2000 the group released their breakthrough album We Still Crunk!!, featuring the single “I Like Dem Girlz”.
Breakthrough (2001-2005)
In 2002, the group signed with TVT Records and released Kings of Crunk, with the single “Get Low” (featuring Ying Yang Twins) becoming a nationwide nightclub hit and reaching the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified multi-platinum by the RIAA in August 2004. In 2004, the group released Crunk Juice, led by the single “Lovers and Friends” (featuring Usher and Ludacris), which peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Billboard Rap chart. The album was certified multi-platinum in January 2005. The group disbanded in 2005 after six studio albums and ongoing conflicts with TVT Records.
During this era, Lil Jon was also credited on numerous crunk releases throughout the 2000s, producing Billboard Hot 100 hits including “Salt Shaker” by Ying Yang Twins, “Cyclone” by Baby Bash, “Damn!” by YoungBloodZ, “Freek-a-Leek” by Petey Pablo, “Goodies” by Ciara, and “Yeah!” by Usher. The latter won Lil Jon a Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Performance as part of his five Grammy Award nominations.
Solo Career (2006-Present)
In 2006, Lil Jon released the single “Snap Yo Fingers” (featuring E-40 and Sean P), which peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum. In 2010, he released his debut solo album Crunk Rock through Universal Republic Records, which peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. In 2013, Lil Jon collaborated with DJ Snake to release “Turn Down for What” on Columbia Records. The single reached number 1 on Billboard’s Rhythmic and Hot Dance/Electronic Songs charts, number 4 on the Hot 100, and was certified multi-platinum by the RIAA. Its music video surpassed one billion YouTube views in 2020.
Beyond music, Lil Jon has made numerous television appearances, including on Chappelle’s Show, Robotomy, Hell’s Kitchen, American Idol, and The Celebrity Apprentice. In 2022, he teamed up with interior designer Anitra Mecadon for the HGTV series Lil Jon Wants to Do What?. In 2024, he released two guided meditation albums and founded the wellness brand Soul Chakra. He also appeared at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, performing “Turn Down for What” and “Get Low” during the ceremonial roll call.

Lil Jon Family
Jonathan H. Smith is the oldest of five children, with three of his siblings later serving in the United States military. He married his longtime partner Nicole in Puerto Rico in 2004; the couple amicably separated in 2022. His son Nathan, born in 1998 and known as DJ Young Slade, began DJing at the age of 11.
Personal Life
Lil Jon resides in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. He is an avid fan of Atlanta’s sports teams, including the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United, and supports the Las Vegas Golden Knights, having received a Stanley Cup ring after their 2023 title that he wore during the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show. He is also a fan of the University of Tennessee Volunteers. In 2024, he began dating Jamila Sozahdah, who gave birth to his second child, and that same year he converted to Islam.
