Lil Wayne Bio

Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., known professionally as Lil Wayne, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record executive, actor, entrepreneur and record producer. Born in New Orleans on 27 September 1982, he was discovered by hometown rapper Birdman in 1993 and signed with Cash Money Records at the age of eleven. Wayne rose to prominence as the youngest member of the Southern hip-hop group Hot Boys before building one of the most celebrated solo careers in modern rap. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential hip-hop artists of the 21st century.

With more than 120 million records sold worldwide, including over 25 million albums and 95 million digital tracks in the United States, Lil Wayne stands among the best-selling music artists of all time. He has won five Grammy Awards, eleven BET Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards and eight NAACP Image Awards. In 2005, he founded the Young Money Entertainment label, which has launched the careers of major artists including Drake and Nicki Minaj.

Early Life and Background

Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. was born on 27 September 1982 in the Hollygrove neighborhood of Uptown New Orleans, Louisiana. His mother, a cook, gave birth to him when she was 19 years old, and his parents divorced when he was two. His father permanently abandoned the family, and Carter later explained that he dropped the D from his name because he did not want to share his given name with a man who was never part of his life. He considers his late stepfather, Reginald “Rabbit” McDonald, to be his true father.

Carter wrote his first rap song at age eight. In the summer of 1991, he met Bryan “Baby” Williams, the co-founder of Cash Money Records now known as Birdman, who became his mentor and encouraged his love of hip-hop. The young Carter began recording freestyle raps on Williams’s answering machine and was soon included on several Cash Money tracks, setting the stage for his professional career.

As a student, Carter attended Eleanor McMain Secondary School in New Orleans, where he was an honor student and a member of the drama club, once playing the Tin Man in the school’s production of The Wiz. After later enrolling at Marion Abramson Senior High School, he left during his tenth-grade year to pursue a GED. His mother made the decision to remove him from school for his safety after discovering that he had been carrying a gun in his school bag for protection.

Path to Rap

Lil Wayne’s path into the music industry began in 1994, when he joined Cash Money Records and was paired with labelmate B.G. as the duo the B.G.’z, releasing the album True Story that same year. In 1997, Wayne and B.G. formed the Southern hip-hop group Hot Boys alongside labelmates Juvenile and Turk. The group’s debut album, Get It How U Live!, was released in 1997, followed by Guerrilla Warfare in 1999, which reached the top five of the Billboard 200 and helped establish Wayne as Cash Money’s flagship artist.

At the age of 17, Lil Wayne released his debut solo album, Tha Block Is Hot, on 2 November 1999. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the RIAA less than a month after release. He followed this success with Lights Out in 2000 and 500 Degreez in 2002, building a strong foundation that prepared him for his later commercial breakthrough.

Lil Wayne Career

Early Career (1999-2004)

During the early 2000s, Lil Wayne balanced his work with the Hot Boys alongside a growing solo career. His albums Lights Out and 500 Degreez achieved gold certification from the RIAA, while 500 Degreez was inspired by former Hot Boys member Juvenile’s earlier project, 400 Degreez. His fourth studio album, Tha Carter, arrived on 29 June 2004 and was widely regarded as a major step forward in his lyrical development, with the single “Go DJ” becoming a top five hit on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

In 2005, Carter released Tha Carter II, which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and sold more than two million copies worldwide. The following year, he collaborated with his label boss Birdman on the joint album Like Father, Like Son, which produced the hit single “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy.” In 2005, he also founded Young Money Entertainment as an imprint of Cash Money and Universal Music Group.

Breakthrough (2007-2011)

The release of Tha Carter III in June 2008 marked the pinnacle of Lil Wayne’s commercial success. The album sold over one million copies in its first week, becoming the first record to do so since 50 Cent’s The Massacre in 2005. Its lead single, “Lollipop” featuring Static Major, became his first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Tha Carter III won four Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song for “Lollipop,” and was later certified double platinum.

Wayne’s momentum continued with We Are Young Money, the 2009 debut compilation from his label, and his eighth solo album, I Am Not a Human Being, released on 27 September 2010 during his incarceration at Rikers Island on a weapons charge. The album climbed to number one on the Billboard 200, making him the first incarcerated rapper to top the chart since Tupac Shakur. He returned to recording after his release, delivering Tha Carter IV in August 2011, which debuted at number one with first-week sales of 964,000 copies.
