Early Life and Background
Max Adler was born in Queens, New York, the eldest son of Lisa Kobrin and Doug Adler. His family moved to Fountain Hills, Arizona, and later Scottsdale, Arizona, during his childhood. Adler grew up in a Jewish household and developed an early interest in performance through school activities.
While attending Horizon High School in Scottsdale, Adler was active in show choir and was a First Chair All-State show choir member, an experience that contributed to his early stage training and comfort with musical performance. After graduating from high school he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting, beginning professional work in 2006.
Path to Celebrity
Adler’s move to Los Angeles led to a series of small roles in film, television and stage productions that built his experience and visibility. He became affiliated with The Porters of Hellsgate theatre company in Los Angeles and has performed in multiple Shakespearean productions with the company, which helped him sharpen classical and ensemble skills.
His stage work and on-screen appearances positioned him for recurring television work, and casting in a high-profile network series provided the opportunity for a career-defining arc. Adler’s early combination of musical performance background, theater training and small-screen experience set the stage for his breakthrough role on network television.
Max Adler Career
Early Career (2006–2009)
Adler began his professional acting career in 2006, taking roles that ranged across theater and screen while building a resume in Los Angeles. During this period he worked with regional theater companies and accepted film and television guest roles that offered industry exposure and established him as a working actor.
His resident artist work with The Porters of Hellsgate included three Shakespearean productions beginning in 2008, which contributed to his range as a performer and provided a steady creative base while he pursued on-camera opportunities. These early credits led directly to casting opportunities on American television drama and comedy series.
Breakthrough (2009–2015)
Adler’s breakthrough came with casting as Dave Karofsky on the Fox musical drama Glee, a recurring role that first appeared in the series after 2009. The character began as a school jock and bully, and Adler’s portrayal evolved into a much more complex and widely discussed storyline when the character was revealed to be a closeted gay teenager.
The episode that addressed Karofsky’s sexuality and the subsequent scenes dealing with bullying and internal conflict drew significant public attention, and Adler received widespread praise for the sensitivity and nuance he brought to the role. The storyline prompted responses from viewers and organizations concerned with LGBT youth and bullying, and Adler engaged with that audience directly through public statements and participation in advocacy.
Glee creator Ryan Murphy expressed interest in writing additional material for Adler, and the role became a recurring, career-defining part that ran through the series’ later seasons. Adler’s performance in episodes that addressed outing, suicide attempt and reconciliation with the character Kurt Hummel by Chris Colfer was noted in press and viewer commentary as among the series’ more impactful dramatic turns.
Notable Works and Milestones
Beyond Glee, Adler held a recurring role from 2014 to 2017 as Tank, the college friend of Bay, on the Freeform series Switched at Birth, further establishing his television credentials. In 2014 he appeared in the feature film Believe Me in the role of Baker, adding feature film credits to a resume that already included sustained stage work with The Porters of Hellsgate and other projects.
Adler’s public profile expanded through his combination of screen work and activism. His participation in charity events, public service addresses and targeted fundraising for muscular dystrophy research became significant milestones that run alongside his acting résumé.

Adler is the son of Doug Adler and Lisa Kobrin and has a younger brother, Jake Adler, who was born in 1992.
