Melina Matsoukas (born January 14, 1981) is an American director known for music videos, film, commercial and television work. She is a two-time Grammy Award winner and four-time MTV Video Music Awards winner for her work on Beyonce’s “Formation” and Rihanna’s visuals. Her narrative feature debut Queen & Slim (2019) was followed by executive producer and director roles on Insecure and other acclaimed series. Matsoukas has been honored with the Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal by the American Film Institute and named to the Ebony Power 100 List.
Early Life and Background
Melina Matsoukas was born in New York City on January 14, 1981, and grew up in the Co-op City housing development in the Bronx. Her father worked as a builder, and her mother taught math at a local high school. Her father is of mixed Greek and Jewish descent, and her mother is of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Jamaican descent. When Matsoukas was eight years old, the family relocated to Hackensack, New Jersey, where she attended Hackensack High School.
Matsoukas pursued higher education at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she earned her degree. She continued her studies at the AFI Conservatory, completing an MFA in cinematography. Her graduate thesis focused specifically on music videos, reflecting her passion for the medium from the outset of her training.
Path to Director
Matsoukas began her professional career at Black Dog Film and later worked at Gorilla Flix, a now-defunct film production company. She signed with the production company Prettybird in 2011, where she has been represented ever since. Her first film project explored how women were viewed in the New York meatpacking industry, though she immediately destroyed it upon completion, later describing it as a learning experience that deepened her love for filmmaking.
Upon completing graduate school in 2006, Matsoukas directed her first music video for Red Handed’s “Dem Girls” featuring Scooby and Paul Wall.
