Madsen appeared in over 300 film and television productions and also lent his voice to several notable video games. Beyond acting, he was known for his Malibu-based hot sauce line called American Badass and his dedication to charitable causes.

He was the son of Elaine Madsen, a filmmaker and author, and Calvin Christian Madsen, a World War II Navy veteran who worked as a firefighter with the Chicago Fire Department. His mother had Irish and Native American ancestry, while his paternal grandparents were Danish immigrants. He grew up alongside two sisters, including actress Virginia Madsen.
Madsen’s parents divorced in the 1960s, after which his mother pursued a career in the arts with encouragement from film critic Roger Ebert. He attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, and later Evanston Township High School in Evanston, Illinois. He had six children, including his eldest daughter Jessica, born in 1979 from a previous relationship, and sons Christian, Max, Luke, Kalvin, and Hudson. His son Christian Madsen followed him into acting. Sadly, his youngest son Hudson died by suicide in January 2022. Madsen was also a brother to actress Virginia Madsen and entrepreneur Cheryl Madsen.

Michael Søren Madsen lived in Malibu, California, with his wife DeAnna Morgan and their children. He was an entrepreneur who launched his own line of hot sauces under the brand American Badass. He was also active in philanthropy, hosting charitable events for children’s hospitals and participating in fundraisers such as the Love Ride.
In February 2022, Madsen was arrested on a misdemeanor trespassing charge in Malibu, and in August 2024 he was arrested on a battery charge following an alleged incident involving his wife. He publicly denied reports that he filed for divorce from Morgan in late 2024. He passed away on July 3, 2025, at his home in Malibu at the age of 67, with heart failure, heart disease, and alcoholism listed as contributing factors. Quentin Tarantino hosted a private memorial for him at the Vista Theatre on August 1, 2025.
