Early Life and Background

Michael James McDonald was born on December 31, 1964 in Fullerton, California. When he was nine years old, he worked as a newspaper delivery boy for the Fullerton News Tribune and later worked at Naugles during high school. He graduated from St. Juliana Catholic Elementary School in Fullerton before attending Servite High School in Anaheim, California. McDonald went on to graduate from the University of Southern California with a business degree.

After college, a friend took McDonald to see an improv comedy show at The Groundlings Theater. Inspired by the performance, McDonald quit his job at the bank and enrolled in The Groundlings improv program. He was a member of the troupe from 1992 to 1997. During that time, he was also involved in writing and directing films for Roger Corman.

Path to Stand-up Comedy

McDonald made his television debut on Family Matters. He guest starred in various shows including Seinfeld (in two episodes playing different parts), Just Shoot Me!, Scrubs and NewsRadio. He also made brief cameos in all three Austin Powers films. McDonald had a starring role with Will Forte and Nicole Sullivan on the short-lived MTV show Clone High as the voice of Gandhi. McDonald appeared as the lead Carly’s assistant in the 1996 sitcom, first appearing in season one episode four, Something About a Family Photo.

During this early period, McDonald developed his skills in sketch comedy and improvisation, which would later become the foundation of his signature style. His diverse roles in various television programs helped him build a reputation as a versatile comedian capable of adapting to different comedic formats and characters.

Michael McDonald began his comedy career in 1987, developing his craft through stand-up performances and improv work. His training with The Groundlings provided him with the foundational skills in improvisational comedy that would define his career. During this period, he worked behind the scenes on films for Roger Corman while simultaneously honing his performance skills in various television guest spots.

His early television appearances demonstrated his ability to play multiple characters and adapt to different comedic environments, from sitcoms to sketch comedy formats. These experiences helped him develop the versatility that would later make him one of MADtv’s most recognizable performers. His work in this era established him as a capable character actor and comedian with broad comedic range.

Breakthrough (1998-2008)

McDonald joined the cast of MADtv in 1998, eventually becoming the longest-standing cast member in the show’s history (ten seasons). Michael McKrofsky of “Real M*********ing Talk.” His memorable characters and impressions made him a central figure on the show.

After ten years on MADtv McDonald left the cast, but he remained as a contributing writer and director for the show’s final season. McDonald was the last member of the cast to be hired in the 1990s, the last cast member to have been born in the 1960s, and the only cast member to have a “best of” dedicated to him. This period represented the pinnacle of his career as a sketch comedian and helped establish him as a recognizable face in American comedy.
