Natasha Anne Bedingfield (born 26 November 1981) is a British and New Zealand singer, songwriter, and record producer. She first gained international attention with her 2004 debut studio album Unwritten, a record anchored by R&B-influenced pop songs celebrating independence and empowerment. Bedingfield has sold more than 20 million records worldwide and remains an active recording artist and touring performer.
Across more than two decades in music, she has released four studio albums, earned a Grammy nomination, and collected four BRIT Award nominations. Her catalog includes enduring pop staples such as “These Words,” “Unwritten,” and “Pocketful of Sunshine.” In addition to her solo work, Bedingfield has lent her voice to film soundtracks, television appearances, charitable recordings, and collaborative projects with other artists.
Early Life and Background
Natasha Anne Bedingfield was born on 26 November 1981 in Cuckfield, West Sussex, England, to New Zealander parents. She spent parts of her childhood in London and in Auckland, New Zealand, an upbringing that exposed her to a blend of British and Kiwi cultural influences from a young age.
She grew up alongside her brother Daniel Bedingfield, also a recording artist, and her sister Nikola Bedingfield. As a teenager, the three siblings formed a dance and electronic group called The DNA Algorithm, an experience that gave Bedingfield her first real platform to develop as a vocalist and songwriter. At the age of 14, she sang on the record Origins Refined Intricacy, released on Steelyard Records.
Bedingfield later enrolled at the University of Greenwich, where she studied psychology for one year before leaving to focus on music. She began recording demos in the home studios of friends and eventually submitted material to record labels, marking the first steps of her professional career.
Path to Music
Bedingfield’s path into the music industry began with grassroots work in London’s church and independent music scenes. In the early 2000s, she composed, wrote, and recorded material for Hillsong Church UK, contributing songs to live releases including Blessed and Shout God’s Fame, as well as the children’s album Jesus Is My Superhero through Hillsong Music Australia. These projects sharpened her songwriting and gave her studio experience.
Her formal break came when manager Gary Wilson introduced her to Phonogenic Records founder and A&R executive Paul Lisberg. Although Lisberg was initially unsure, a trial studio session with writers Steve Kipner and Andrew Frampton convinced him of her potential. In July 2003, Bedingfield signed a recording contract with BMG UK & Ireland through its Phonogenic imprint, setting the stage for her debut album.
Natasha Bedingfield Career
Early Career (2001–2003)
Although her career start is marked at 2001, Bedingfield spent the early 2000s building her craft behind the scenes. She contributed songwriting and vocals to church-affiliated projects and honed her demos while pitching to British labels. These years allowed her to mature as both a vocalist and a writer before her commercial breakthrough.
Her persistence paid off in 2003 when she secured a deal with Phonogenic Records. The groundwork laid during this period, including collaborations with Kipner and Frampton, ultimately produced the material that would shape her debut album and introduce her distinctive pop sound to a wider audience.
Breakthrough (2003–2008)
Bedingfield’s debut album Unwritten was released in September 2004 and was an immediate commercial success, debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart and reaching the top thirty in the United States. It achieved multi-platinum status in the UK and Gold status in the US, while singles “Single,” “These Words,” “Unwritten,” and “I Bruise Easily” all charted internationally. “These Words” became her first UK number one, and “Unwritten” became the second-most-played song on US radio in 2006.
Her second album, N.B., was released in Europe in April 2007 and produced the UK top-ten singles “I Wanna Have Your Babies” and “Soulmate.” After mixed European results, her American label reworked the project into Pocketful of Sunshine, released in January 2008. The title track peaked at number five on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming her best-selling single in the United States, while “Love Like This” also reached the top twenty.
