Early Life and Background
Nicholas Dimitri Constantine Galitzine was born on 29 September 1994 in Hammersmith, West London. He grew up near actor Robert Pattinson, whom he has described as his career idol. His father, Geoffrey Leo Alexander Galitzine, is a co-founder of a glass recycling company and a former financier in the City of London. Despite rumours that the family is linked to the Russian noble Golitsyn house, his grandfather, Edward Ralph Alexander Tier, changed his surname to Galitzine in 1956, and his traceable paternal ancestors are British. His mother, Lora Maria Konstantina Papayanni, is Greek-American, and he has an older sister named Lexi.
Galitzine spent time visiting relatives in the Peloponnese, Athens, and the Greek islands during holidays, which helped him connect with his Greek heritage. He has described himself as reckless in his youth, including smoking at age 13. He attended Dulwich College, where he played rugby, track, and football. He trained with the Harlequins Academy and once aimed to play rugby professionally, but a series of injuries, including damage to his rotator cuff, ended that ambition.
He later joined Pleasance Islington, a youth theatre company, and became interested in acting after friends persuaded him to audition for a production of the musical Spring Awakening. He chose to pursue acting professionally instead of going to university, a decision that worried his parents. To support himself, he worked part-time jobs, including at a frozen yogurt shop alongside actress Simone Ashley.
Path to Celebrity
Galitzine’s entry into acting came through youth theatre and independent film work in the United Kingdom. His first professional role arrived in 2014 with The Beat Beneath My Feet, in which he starred opposite Luke Perry as a lonely teenager who blackmails a former rock star into mentoring him. The casting drew some criticism, with The Guardian suggesting he was too conventionally attractive to play an outcast, but the role gave him his first on-screen credit.
In 2015, he appeared in a guest role in the episode “The Legend of Terrence Graves” of the TV series Legends, playing a blackmailer of an MI6 agent. That same year, he was named a “Star of Tomorrow” by Screen International, an early sign of industry recognition. He then took on leading roles in two 2016 teen dramas: High Strung, in which he played a young violinist who performs in a subway station, and the Irish comedy-drama Handsome Devil, where he portrayed a closeted gay student named Conor Masters. Handsome Devil later earned five nominations at the 15th Irish Film & Television Awards.
Throughout 2017 and 2019, Galitzine continued building his résumé with roles in The Changeover, The Watcher in the Woods, the Netflix horror series Chambers, and the drama film Share. These smaller projects helped him transition from British independent film toward larger American studio productions.
