Rafe Joseph Spall was born on 10 March 1983 in East Dulwich, London, the second of three children of Shane Spall and actor Timothy Spall. He was named after a character from The Knight of the Burning Pestle, a role associated with his father’s stage work, and grew up in a household connected to performance and theatre.
Spall attended Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College and joined the National Youth Theatre at 15 as he pursued acting.
