Russell Edward Brand (born 4 June 1975) is an English comedian, actor, podcaster, and media personality. He initially worked as a stand-up comedian and radio and television presenter in the United Kingdom, where he gained public attention for hosting the television show Big Brother’s Big Mouth, a spin-off from the reality series Big Brother broadcast on E4. Brand has built a wide-ranging career across stand-up comedy, film, radio, and digital media, establishing himself as a prominent figure in British and American entertainment.
Early Life and Background
Russell Edward Brand was born on 4 June 1975 at Orsett Hospital in Grays, Essex, England. He is the only child of Barbara Elizabeth (née Nichols) and photographer Ronald Henry Brand. Brand’s parents separated when he was six months old, and he was raised by his mother. When Brand was eight, his mother was diagnosed with uterine cancer and then breast cancer one year later, and while she underwent treatment, he lived with relatives.
At age 14, Brand developed bulimia nervosa. He left home at 16 because of disagreements with his mother’s partner. Brand attended Grays School and in 1991 was accepted to the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, where his first year of tuition was funded by Essex County Council. However, after his first year, Brand was expelled for illegal drug use and poor attendance. He made his theatrical debut at age 15 in a school production of Bugsy Malone.
Path to Comedy
Brand began his entertainment career in the mid-1990s, appearing in episodes of The Bill and the children’s adventure series Mud in 1994 while still a teenager. His stand-up comedy career began in 2000 when he performed at the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year final, finishing fourth. That same year, he made his Edinburgh Festival Fringe debut as part of the stand-up show Pablo Diablo’s Cryptic Triptych.
In 2004, Brand took his first one-man confessional show, Better Now, to the Edinburgh Festival, where he discussed his heroin addiction. He returned the following year with Eroticised Humour and launched his first nationwide tour, Shame, in 2006. Brand’s work drew on embarrassing incidents from his own life and the tabloid coverage surrounding him. Early Career (2000–2006)
In the early 2000s, Brand worked on various television projects including the documentary and comedy program RE:Brand on UK Play in 2002. He hosted Big Brother’s Eforum on E4 in 2004, which evolved into Big Brother’s Big Mouth for subsequent series. Brand presented a debate show called Russell Brand’s Got Issues on E4 before moving to Channel 4, where it was rebranded as The Russell Brand Show. He also hosted 1 Leicester Square on MTV in 2006.
During this period, Brand performed stand-up at Amnesty International’s Secret Policeman’s Ball in 2006 and again in 2012. He co-hosted an evening of the Teenage Cancer Trust gigs with Noel Fielding in March 2007 and performed for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip at the 2007 Royal Variety Performance. Brand achieved major recognition with his first major film role as Flash Harry in St Trinian’s (2007). His breakthrough came with the 2008 film Forgetting Sarah Marshall, in which he played rock star Aldous Snow. Brand received rave reviews for this performance and revealed the character was changed from an author to a rock star because of his audition. He starred alongside Adam Sandler in Bedtime Stories (2008) and reprised the Aldous Snow role in Get Him to the Greek (2010).
Brand hosted the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, where his comments led to controversy but drew strong ratings. He returned to host the 2009 MTV VMAs at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. In 2011, he guest-hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live and played the title character in Arthur, a remake of the 1981 film. Brand was previously married to American singer Katy Perry. They met in 2009 and married in October 2010 in India. Brand filed for divorce in December 2011, citing irreconcilable differences, and the divorce was finalized in July 2012. Brand has been open about his diagnoses of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder, as well as his history with bulimia, pornography addiction, and self-harm. He credits his practice of transcendental meditation with helping him recover from drug dependence. Brand became a Christian and was water baptized by Bear Grylls in April 2024.
