Early Life and Background
Sara Gilbert was born Sara Rebecca Abeles in Santa Monica, California, the daughter of Barbara Cowan and Harold Abeles. Both of her parents are Jewish. Her maternal grandfather was television writer Harry Crane, co-creator of The Honeymooners, which gave her an early connection to the entertainment industry. Gilbert grew up in a blended household that included adopted half-siblings, including Melissa Gilbert and Jonathan Gilbert, both well known for their work on Little House on the Prairie. In 1984, she took the last name Gilbert from her mother’s first husband, Paul Gilbert, and has been known professionally as Sara Gilbert ever since.
From a young age, Gilbert was drawn to performance and appeared in television commercials, including spots for Kool-Aid, before auditioning for scripted roles. Her early exposure to the entertainment world through her family, combined with a steady stream of small auditions, helped her develop confidence in front of the camera. She graduated from Yale University in 1997 with honors, majoring in art with an emphasis on photography. Producers of Roseanne accommodated her college years by adjusting taping schedules and filming remote segments of her character at a New York soundstage so that she could continue her studies while remaining on the show.
Path to Acting
Gilbert’s path to acting began in childhood, when she landed commercials and small television roles in Los Angeles. At the age of thirteen, she auditioned for and won the part of Darlene Conner, the sarcastic middle child of the Conner family on the ABC sitcom Roseanne. The show premiered in 1988 and quickly became one of the most-watched comedies in the United States, giving Gilbert a national platform before she had finished high school.
During her years on Roseanne, Gilbert also contributed to the writing of the series, receiving credit for the fourth-season episode story “Don’t Make Me Over.” Beyond her weekly work on the sitcom, she appeared in television movies and continued to develop her craft alongside seasoned performers. After the original run of Roseanne ended in 1997, Gilbert pursued a range of projects, including film roles and stage work at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, where she appeared in a production of The Hot L Baltimore in 2000.
