Christian Lundgaard Bio
Christian Lundgaard (born 23 July 2001) is a Danish professional racing driver who currently drives the No. 7 Chevrolet for Arrow McLaren in the IndyCar Series. A former member of the Alpine Academy from 2017 to 2022, he is widely recognized as the first Danish driver ever to win an IndyCar race. Before transitioning to American open-wheel racing, he built his reputation across European junior formulae and karting.
Lundgaard began his racing career in 2017, winning both the F4 Spanish Championship and the SMP F4 Championship in his debut year. He was named the 2022 IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year and captured his first IndyCar victory at the 2023 Honda Indy Toronto. He has since become one of the most promising young talents on the IndyCar grid.
Early Life and Background
Christian Lundgaard was born on 23 July 2001 in Hedensted, Denmark. He grew up in a motorsport-oriented household, as his father Henrik Lundgaard is the 2000 European Rally champion. That family connection to racing helped shape Christian’s path from a young age and introduced him to competitive driving through karting.
He began karting professionally in 2012, competing across Europe and collecting three major titles during his karting years, including the 2015 CIK-FIA Karting European Championship. By December 2016, Motorsport.com ranked him fifth on a list of the top ten karting drivers with future potential, signaling his transition from national-level talent to international prospect.
His brother Daniel also pursued racing, racing alongside Christian in the 2017 F4 Danish Championship, and now designs Christian’s race helmets, keeping the family closely connected to his professional career.
Path to NASCAR
Although Christian Lundgaard’s career has unfolded primarily in open-wheel racing rather than NASCAR, his progression through the global motorsport ladder brought him to the attention of North American teams. He joined the Renault Sport Academy in March 2017 while still competing in F4, and rose quickly through the junior categories in Europe.
After finishing as runner-up in the 2018 Formula Renault Eurocup, he moved to the 2019 FIA Formula 3 Championship with ART Grand Prix, ending the year sixth overall. He then stepped up to the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship with ART, where he took two wins and finished seventh overall. A difficult 2021 F2 campaign, combined with the closure of his F1 development path, led him to test an IndyCar with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in July 2021, beginning his American adventure.
That test led to his IndyCar debut at the 2021 Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he qualified an impressive fourth and finished twelfth. The strong showing convinced the team to sign him to a multi-year IndyCar deal starting in 2022, officially marking his transition to top-line North American open-wheel racing.
