She is the daughter of Daniel Maslany, a woodworker, and Renate Maslany, a French–English translator and interpreter. She has two younger brothers, including fellow actor Daniel Maslany, and she carries Austrian, German, Polish, Romanian, and Ukrainian ancestry.

Maslany grew up in a multilingual household. She attended French immersion for elementary school and was taught German by her mother before learning English, while her maternal grandparents also spoke German around her.
