Brent Primus Bio
Brent Primus (born April 12, 1985) is an American mixed martial artist currently competing for the Professional Fighters League (PFL) in the lightweight division. He formerly competed for Bellator MMA, where he was a one-time Bellator Lightweight World Champion. Primus trains out of Sports Lab Team Oyama and Gracie Barra Portland and is widely respected for his elite Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills.
Early Life and Background
Brent Primus was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon. He attended Sheldon High School, where he played soccer and helped his team tie South Eugene High School for the co-state title. After high school, he began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, an effort that paid off quickly when he earned his black belt in only six years. He has since risen to a 3rd degree black belt rank in the discipline.
Primus had a turbulent childhood and teenage years. He never met his biological father outside of a prison setting, with one of his only glimpses coming when he saw him on an episode of the television show “Cops.” At the age of 13, he was kicked out of the house by his stepfather and became homeless, bouncing between homes for a period. To support himself, he began selling marijuana, and by age 15 he had purchased his own home. At 16, his house was raided by rival gangsters who held him at gunpoint, and at 18 his home was raided by police, leading to a jail sentence. During this period of constant conflict, a friend signed him up for an amateur fight, an event that redirected his life toward mixed martial arts.
Path to MMA
Primus compiled an amateur record of 5-1 before making his professional debut in September 2010, defeating Chris Ensley via first-round submission. In his second professional bout on May 12, 2012, he defeated Roy Bradshaw via first-round submission, establishing himself as a finisher early in his career.
His amateur success and quick professional finishes helped him earn a contract with Bellator in 2013, launching his career on one of the sport’s biggest stages. His grappling-heavy style and submission instincts made him an attractive signing for an organization known for developing well-rounded fighters.
Brent Primus Career
Early Career (2010–2013)
Brent Primus built the foundation of his professional career with a series of submission victories on the regional circuit, capped by a 5-1 amateur record. His two early professional wins, both ending in the first round by submission, showed the grappling pedigree that would become his trademark.
Those performances were enough to attract the attention of Bellator MMA, which signed him in 2013 and set the stage for his rapid rise through the lightweight division.
Bellator Debut and Rise (2013–2016)
Primus made his Bellator debut on September 27, 2013, at Bellator 101 against Scott Thometz, winning via rear-naked choke submission at 3:48 in the first round to improve his record to 3-0. He followed that with a second straight first-round rear-naked choke of Brett Glass at Bellator 109, and then a first-round TKO of Chris Jones at Bellator 111, the first finish in his career that did not come by rear-naked choke. After nearly a year and a half away from competition, he returned at Bellator 141 on August 28, 2015, to take a split decision over Derek Anderson, and then earned another split decision over Gleristone Santos at Bellator 153 on April 22, 2016, extending his unbeaten Bellator run to five fights.
Bellator Championship Era (2017–2019)
With an undefeated five-fight Bellator streak, Primus was booked to face Bellator Lightweight champion Michael Chandler at Bellator NYC on June 24, 2017. The bout was halted at 2:22 of the first round after Chandler suffered a visible left ankle injury, with the fight awarded to Primus via TKO and the Bellator Lightweight World Championship. The result was widely regarded as one of the biggest upsets in Bellator history.
An expected rematch at Bellator 197 on April 13, 2018, was scrapped after Primus withdrew due to a knee injury, with Brandon Girtz stepping in as a replacement. The rematch finally took place in the main event of Bellator 212 on December 14, 2018, where Primus was out-wrestled for much of the fight and dropped a unanimous decision to Chandler, relinquishing the title. In his first bout after losing the belt, he submitted Tim Wilde via gogoplata in the first round at Bellator: Birmingham on May 4, 2019.
Bellator Lightweight Grand Prix (2020–2023)
Primus was booked to face Peter Queally at Bellator 240 on February 22, 2020, but took a neck-crank submission win over replacement Chris Bungard in the first round after Queally withdrew with a knee injury. On April 17, 2021, he announced a new six-fight contract with the promotion. He dropped a split decision to Islam Mamedov at Bellator 263, rebounded with a unanimous decision over Benson Henderson at Bellator 268, and was stopped by Alexandr Shabliy via second-round TKO at Bellator 282 on June 24, 2022. Stepping in as a replacement for the suspended Sidney Outlaw, he took a unanimous decision over Mansour Barnaoui in the quarter-final of the $1 million Bellator Lightweight World Grand Prix at Bellator 296 on May 12, 2023. In the semifinals at Bellator 300 on October 7, 2023, he originally lost a unanimous decision to reigning champion Usman Nurmagomedov before the result was overturned by the CSAC after Nurmagomedov tested positive for a banned substance.
Professional Fighters League Era (2024–Present)
Primus launched his PFL career on April 12, 2024, at PFL 2, submitting Bruno Miranda via rear-naked choke. He followed that with a third-round submission of Solomon Renfro at PFL 5 on June 21, 2024, a result that clinched the top seed in the PFL Lightweight tournament. In the semifinals on August 16, 2024, at PFL 8, he took a unanimous decision over Clay Collard before losing the final to Gadzhi Rabadanov by third-round knockout at PFL 10 on November 29, 2024. On February 26, 2025, PFL officially revealed that Primus would join the 2025 PFL Lightweight Tournament.
