Early Life and Background
Derrick James Lewis was born on February 7, 1985, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was raised as the second oldest of seven siblings by a single mother. Growing up in New Orleans, Lewis was often involved in street fights and faced a troubled upbringing during his formative years.
In 1998, Lewis and his family relocated to Houston, Texas. At the age of seventeen, he began training in boxing and was preparing for his first amateur fight when the gym he trained at unexpectedly closed its doors. Shortly after graduating from high school, Lewis was charged with aggravated assault and placed on probation. He later attended Kilgore College on a full football scholarship, where he violated his probation and was sentenced to five years in prison. He ultimately served three and a half years before his release.
A week after being released from prison, a friend introduced Lewis to mixed martial arts. While working as a tow-truck driver, he continued his boxing training under the guidance of former heavyweight champion George Foreman. After a dominant professional MMA debut, Lewis committed fully to the sport of mixed martial arts.
Path to MMA
Lewis made his amateur MMA debut on October 16, 2009, against Jay Ross at an LSAMMA event, losing the bout via TKO due to a doctor stoppage. He rebounded in his second outing, defeating Tim Buchanan via TKO at a United States American Combat Association event on January 30, 2010. Following this performance, Lewis turned professional in 2010.
Over the next several months, he built a regional fight record of 4–1, which earned him a contract with Bellator MMA in May 2010. His early professional journey showcased his developing knockout ability and laid the foundation for his rise up the heavyweight ranks.

Following his departure from Bellator, Lewis strung together an impressive run that included a 6–0 record with one no-contest. During this stretch, he captured the Legacy FC Heavyweight Championship and successfully defended it. His consistent finishing ability and physical attributes eventually earned him a contract with the UFC.
UFC Breakthrough (2014–2018)
Lewis was originally scheduled to make his UFC debut against Nandor Guelmino at UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann 2 in August 2013, but the bout was canceled due to an injury. He eventually debuted for the promotion at UFC on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne on April 19, 2014, defeating Jack May via TKO in the first round. He followed this up with a first-round knockout of Guto Inocente at The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale on July 6, 2014.
After a setback against Matt Mitrione, Lewis began a sustained climb up the heavyweight ladder. He earned notable victories over fighters like Gabriel Gonzaga, Roy Nelson, Travis Browne, and Shamil Abdurakhimov. His bout against Francis Ngannou at UFC 226 on July 7, 2018, resulted in a unanimous decision win for Lewis, though the fight drew heavy criticism for its lack of action. Later that year, Lewis produced one of the most memorable comebacks in UFC history, knocking out Alexander Volkov in the closing seconds of the third round at UFC 229 on October 6, 2018, after being visibly hurt on multiple occasions. This performance earned him the Performance of the Night award.
On November 3, 2018, Lewis challenged Daniel Cormier for the UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 230, but was submitted via rear-naked choke in the second round. Despite the loss, he signed a new contract with the UFC and continued his ascent in the division.
UFC Contender Era (2019–Present)
Lewis faced Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC Fight Night 146 on March 9, 2019, losing by TKO in the second round in a bout that earned him the Fight of the Night award. He rebounded with wins over Blagoy Ivanov and Ilir Latifi before finishing Aleksei Oleinik via TKO at UFC Fight Night 174 on August 8, 2020. With that finish, Lewis set the record for most knockouts by a heavyweight in UFC history.
He added another highlight-reel finish against Curtis Blaydes at UFC Fight Night 185 on February 20, 2021, and later challenged Ciryl Gane for the Interim UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 265 on August 7, 2021. Lewis has continued to be a mainstay in the heavyweight division, facing top contenders such as Tai Tuivasa, Sergei Pavlovich, and Serghei Spivac. He also holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Driving Style and Strengths
Lewis has been described as a “classic heavyweight” due to his knockout power and physical presence. He prefers to engage in stand-up fighting, an approach he calls “swangin’ and banging.” Analysts have noted his unusual ability to escape from the bottom position by simply standing up, a skill that has frustrated many of his grappling-focused opponents. However, fighters with strong folkstyle wrestling backgrounds have historically been able to control him on the ground.
Notable Events and Milestones
Lewis holds the UFC record for most knockouts in the organization’s history with sixteen. His last-second knockout of Alexander Volkov at UFC 229 is considered one of the most dramatic finishes in UFC history. He also pulled off a stunning flying knee knockout of Marcos Rogério de Lima at UFC 291 on July 29, 2023, extending his knockout record. Lewis earned the record for most knockouts regardless of weight division after his finish of Chris Daukaus at UFC Fight Night 199 on December 18, 2021.
