Israel Adesanya Bio
Israel Mobolaji Temitayo Odunayo Oluwafemi Owolabi Adesanya, born on 22 July 1989 in Lagos, Nigeria, is a Nigerian-New Zealand professional mixed martial artist, former kickboxer, and boxer. He currently competes in the Middleweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he is a former two-time UFC Middleweight Champion. Known by the ring name “The Last Stylebender,” a reference to the anime-influenced series Avatar: The Last Airbender, Adesanya has become one of the most recognizable figures in mixed martial arts. He currently trains with City Kickboxing in Auckland, New Zealand, and as of late 2025 holds the #6 spot in the UFC middleweight rankings.
Early Life and Background
Adesanya was born in Lagos, Nigeria, as the eldest of five children. His father, Oluwafemi, works as an accountant, and his mother, Taiwo, is a nurse. Of Yoruba ethnicity, Adesanya attended Chrisland School in Opebi and joined its Taekwondo after-school club before being withdrawn by his mother following an injury. In 1999, his family relocated to Ghana for ten months, and later moved to Rotorua, New Zealand, when he was ten years old, so that he and his siblings could pursue a well-recognised higher education.
Adesanya enrolled at Rotorua Boys’ High School, where he was bullied and did not take an interest in traditional sports. Instead, he developed a deep fascination with Japanese anime such as Death Note and the manga series Naruto. He has credited his childhood experiences, including watching British boxer Prince Naseem Hamed, with planting the seeds of his future in combat sports. Following high school, Adesanya enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Computer Design at the Universal College of Learning in Whanganui.
Path to MMA
At eighteen years old, Adesanya began training in kickboxing after being inspired by the Muay Thai film Ong-Bak. Two years later, he abandoned his studies to pursue fighting full-time, compiling an amateur record of 32-1 before turning professional. He relocated to Auckland, New Zealand, at twenty-one to train in mixed martial arts under Eugene Bareman at City Kickboxing. There, he trained alongside future UFC fighters including Dan Hooker, Kai Kara-France, and Alexander Volkanovski, while also developing his wrestling under Andrei Păuleț.

Following a decision win over Jared Cannonier at UFC 276, Adesanya faced Alex Pereira, who had twice defeated him in kickboxing, at UFC 281 in November 2022, where he lost the title via fifth-round TKO. He reclaimed the belt in their rematch at UFC 287 in April 2023, scoring a dramatic second-round knockout. 2025 Season Performance
Adesanya’s 2025 campaign began with a setback, as he was stopped by Nassourdine Imavov via second-round TKO in the main event of UFC Fight Night 250 on 1 February 2025. The loss was his first non-title bout in over five years and confirmed he remains outside the immediate title picture. Entering the latter half of 2025, Adesanya sits at #6 in the UFC middleweight rankings, working closely with his long-time City Kickboxing coaching team and head coach Eugene Bareman to refine his approach. With several high-profile names ahead of him in the division, his path back to a title shot likely depends on a quick return to the win column and a marquee matchup against a top contender. His partnership with Puma and his enduring global profile ensure he remains one of the sport’s most marketable stars, regardless of his position in the rankings.
