Magomed Alibulatovich Ankalaev is a Russian professional mixed martial artist born on June 2, 1992, in the village of Teletl’ in the Shamilsky District of Dagestan, Russia. He currently competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and is a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Early Life and Background
Magomed Ankalaev was raised in the village of Teletl’, a small Avar community in the Shamilsky District of Dagestan. He came of age in a region widely recognized for producing elite combat athletes. Ankalaev lost his father when he was in the ninth or tenth grade, and as the oldest son, he has three sisters and one brother.
While studying at the Dagestan State Pedagogical University (DSPU) in Makhachkala, Ankalaev trained in Greco-Roman wrestling for one year and graduated from the sport faculty. At the same time, he competed in combat sambo and was awarded the title of Master of Sports in the discipline. Path to MMA
Ankalaev was drawn to MMA because of the close similarity between the sport and combat sambo.
