Petr Yan Bio
Petr Evgenyevich Yan is a Russian professional mixed martial artist born on February 11, 1993, in Dudinka, a town in the Taymyr Peninsula of Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. Competing in the bantamweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, he is recognized as a former UFC Bantamweight Champion and as one of the most decorated fighters to come out of the Russian mixed martial arts pipeline. Yan carries the nickname “No Mercy,” a fitting label for a fighter known for sharp boxing combinations and finishing instincts.
Trained in taekwondo, boxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Yan built a layered striking base before turning professional in 2014. After capturing championships in the Russian promotion Absolute Championship Berkut, he signed with the UFC and quickly climbed the bantamweight ladder, reaching the top of the division by 2020.
Early Life and Background
Yan was born into a mixed-heritage family, with a father of Chinese and Georgian-Russian roots and a Russian mother. He grew up in Dudinka, a small Arctic town, where he began training in ITF taekwondo in the sixth grade. He frequently competed in street and schoolyard fights, which led his family to relocate several times in an effort to keep him out of trouble.
His older brother trained in boxing in Dudinka, and Petr began following him to the gym, eventually training under his brother’s reluctant supervision. Yan committed to boxing for the next eight years, working his way up to the prestigious rank of Master of Sport in boxing at 64 kilograms. The discipline and footwork he developed during those years would later define his mixed martial arts style.
After his competitive boxing years, Yan enrolled at Siberian Federal University in Omsk, where he earned a degree in Physical Culture and Sport. His academic background gave him a deeper understanding of conditioning, movement, and athletic development, all of which translated directly into his professional fighting career.
Path to MMA
Yan made his professional mixed martial arts debut in December 2014 at the Eurasian Fighting Championship in Baikal, where he stopped Murad Bakiev in the third round by knockout. The performance was a strong opening statement and drew attention from regional promotions looking for emerging Russian talent.
In 2015, he signed with Absolute Championship Berkut, one of the most competitive MMA promotions in Russia at the time. He quickly built a fan base by defeating experienced opponents, including Brazilian veteran Renato Velame, before rattling off stoppage wins over Kharon Orzumiev and Artur Mirzakhanyan. His rapid rise through the ACB ranks positioned him as one of the most promising bantamweights in the country.
Petr Yan Career
Early Career (2014–2017)
Yan opened his career with three straight finishes on the Russian regional circuit before stepping into ACB’s main stage. On October 24, 2015, he took on Murad Kalamov and earned a unanimous decision, earning a shot at the ACB bantamweight title against Magomed Magomedov at ACB 32 in March 2016. Although he lost that bout by split decision in a five-round fight, many observers, including ACB president Mairbek Khasiev, believed Yan had done enough to win, and the fight was named ACB’s Fight of the Year.
Yan rebounded with a win over Ed Arthur at ACB 41, then captured the vacant ACB bantamweight championship by defeating Magomedov in their April 2017 rematch at ACB 57. Months later, he defended the title with a third-round knockout of Matheus Mattos at ACB 71, cementing his status as one of the premier bantamweights outside the UFC.
UFC Breakthrough (2018–2020)
Yan signed with the UFC in January 2018 and debuted against Teruto Ishihara at UFC Fight Night 132 in Singapore, winning by first-round technical knockout. He followed that with a decision win over Jin Soo Son that earned him a Fight of the Night bonus, and added a second-round TKO of Douglas Silva de Andrade at UFC 232 in December 2018.
In 2019, Yan signed a new four-fight deal with the UFC, then won decisions over John Dodson and Jimmie Rivera. He capped the year with a third-round knockout of UFC legend Urijah Faber at UFC 245, which earned him a Performance of the Night bonus. After Henry Cejudo vacated the bantamweight title, Yan faced former featherweight champion José Aldo at UFC 251 on July 12, 2020, and won the vacant UFC Bantamweight Championship via fifth-round technical knockout.
Post-Championship Era (2021–2024)
Yan’s first title defense came against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 259 in March 2021. The fight ended in the fourth round when Yan was disqualified for an illegal knee, costing him the bantamweight title. Later in 2021, he bounced back by winning the interim belt with a unanimous decision over Cory Sandhagen at UFC 267, earning another Fight of the Night award.
A title unification bout with Sterling at UFC 273 in April 2022 ended in a split decision loss for Yan. He followed that with a controversial split decision defeat to Sean O’Malley at UFC 280, a result widely criticized as one of the year’s most disputed decisions. Yan then dropped a unanimous decision to Merab Dvalishvili in March 2023.
After withdrawing from a December 2023 booking due to injury, Yan returned against Song Yadong at UFC 299 in March 2024. Tearing his ACL and meniscus in the first round, he fought through the injuries to win by unanimous decision. He capped 2024 with another decision win, this time over former two-time flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC Fight Night 248 in November.
Return to Form (2025–Present)
Yan kept his momentum rolling in 2025 with a unanimous decision win over Marcus McGhee at UFC on ABC 9 in July. The victory reinforced his place in the top tier of the bantamweight division and set the stage for another shot at undisputed gold.
Driving Style and Strengths
Yan’s foundation as a Master of Sport in boxing gives him elite hands inside the cage, with sharp combinations, strong counterpunching, and crisp footwork. He pairs his striking with a steadily improving grappling game developed at American Top Team, where he also hones his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under a blue belt. His composure under pressure, along with his cardio and ability to adapt mid-fight, has made him a difficult matchup for nearly every opponent he has faced.
Notable Events and Milestones
Yan’s fifth-round TKO of José Aldo for the vacant bantamweight title at UFC 251 stands as the defining moment of his career. He has also earned multiple Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night bonuses, and his 2022 loss to Sean O’Malley was later named Sherdog’s “2022 Robbery of the Year,” highlighting his reputation for delivering dramatic, closely contested fights.
