Known by the nickname Mountain Tiger, he is ranked #14 in the UFC light heavyweight rankings as of November 25, 2025. He fights out of Qingdao, Shandong, China, and represents Sunkin Fight alongside Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts.
A versatile striker trained in Sanda, Zhang has built a professional record that includes 19 wins and 7 losses across 26 total bouts. He has also competed at Heavyweight and Middleweight during his career. He holds a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and trains with one of the most respected gyms in the sport.
Early Life and Background
Zhang Mingyang was born in Taihe County in Fuyang city of Anhui province in 1998. His father gave him the nickname Mountain Tiger because he was born in the Year of the Tiger, and his father hoped he would grow up to be as brave as one. He grew up surrounded by a family that valued martial arts, which helped shape his path as a fighter.
When Zhang was seven years old, he met his uncle, who had recently finished his training at the Shaolin Monastery. His uncle began teaching him martial arts, sparking an early passion for combat sports. At the age of twelve, Zhang’s parents agreed to send him to the Shaolin Monastery to train, following a strong personal request from the young fighter.
At the Shaolin Monastery, Zhang began practicing Sanda, a Chinese striking discipline that combined boxing, kicks, and throws. By the age of thirteen, he had become the Henan Province Youth Sanda Champion and the National Youth Sanda Champion. At fourteen, he was selected to join the Shanxi Provincial Sanda Team, where his talent continued to grow.
Path to MMA
While training on the Sanda team, Zhang accidentally watched a UFC video online. The sport immediately caught his attention, and he decided to switch to mixed martial arts with the clear goal of one day fighting in the UFC. Despite his family’s concerns, he left his hometown and moved to Qingdao in Shandong province.
After relocating, Zhang joined Sunkin Fight, a subsidiary of the Sunkin Group, a real estate company that supports combat sports in China. He later added training with Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts to his camp, which gave him access to high-level coaching and a more complete MMA skill set. His early foundation in Sanda became a defining part of his striking style.
