Arjun Atwal Bio
Arjun Singh Atwal (born 20 March 1973) is an Indian professional golfer who has competed on the Asian Tour and the European Tour. He is the first player born in India both to participate in and to win on the U.S.-based PGA Tour, a milestone he reached in 2010. Standing 185 cm tall and competing at a playing weight around 84 kilograms, Atwal has built a multi-decade career that has helped raise the profile of Indian golf on the international stage.
Early Life and Background
Arjun Singh Atwal was born in Asansol, in the Indian state of West Bengal, and grew up in nearby Kolkata. He was raised in a Sikh family by his father, Harminder Singh Atwal, an industrialist based in Asansol and Kolkata. He attended St. James’ School in Kolkata, where he completed his early schooling before later spending two years in the United States at W. T. Clarke High School in Westbury, New York, on Long Island.
Atwal first picked up a golf club at the age of 14. He developed his game at two of India’s most historic venues, the Royal Calcutta Golf Club and the Tollygunge Club, both located near his family home in Kolkata. Those early rounds on traditional Indian courses helped shape the disciplined, course-management approach that has come to define his professional play.
Path to Professional Golf
After completing his schooling, Atwal committed fully to competitive golf. In 1995, he turned professional and quickly established himself among the leading players on the Asian PGA Tour. His breakthrough season came in 1995 itself, when he was named the Asian PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, signaling the arrival of a significant new talent from India.
He continued to develop throughout the late 1990s, sharpening his game against a deep international field on the Asian circuit. By the early 2000s, Atwal was ready to test himself on the larger European stage, setting the stage for his historic achievements on both the European Tour and the PGA Tour.
Arjun Atwal Career
Early Career (1995–2002)
From the moment he turned professional in 1995, Arjun Atwal was a fixture on the Asian Tour. He won multiple titles on the circuit and steadily climbed the rankings, building a reputation as one of the region’s most consistent performers. His strong form in developmental and regional events earned him the opportunity to pursue membership on the broader European Tour.
Atwal became the second Indian golfer, after Jeev Milkha Singh, to earn playing rights on the European Tour, and he was the first to win on that circuit. He captured a five-stroke victory at the 2002 Caltex Singapore Masters, a co-sanctioned event between the Asian Tour and the European Tour, announcing his arrival as a winner at the highest level of the game outside the United States.
European Tour Breakthrough (2002–2003)
Atwal’s 2002 triumph at the Caltex Singapore Masters was followed by a second European Tour title at the 2003 Carlsberg Malaysian Open, also co-sanctioned with the Asian Tour. Those back-to-back victories confirmed his status as one of the leading international players of his generation and gave him the confidence to chase playing opportunities in the United States.
In 2003, Atwal also topped the Asian PGA Tour Order of Merit and was named the Asian PGA Tour Players’ Player of the Year, completing one of the most successful seasons ever recorded by an Indian golfer on the regional circuit.
PGA Tour Era (2004–Present)
Later in 2003, Atwal finished seventh at the PGA Tour Qualifying School in the United States, earning his PGA Tour card for 2004 and becoming the first Indian golfer to do so. In his 2004 rookie season, he finished 142nd on the money list, gaining valuable experience at the sport’s highest level. In 2005, he came agonizingly close to his first PGA Tour victory at the BellSouth Classic, posting a final-round 64 before losing a five-man sudden-death playoff that Phil Mickelson eventually won.
After a shoulder injury and a stretch of inconsistent form, Atwal lost his PGA Tour card following the 2010 RBC Canadian Open. He then entered the 2011 Wyndham Championship as a Monday qualifier and won the event, becoming the first India-born player ever to win on the PGA Tour and the first Monday qualifier to win a PGA Tour event since Fred Wadsworth at the 1986 Southern Open. He followed that with only two top-10 finishes over the next two seasons and lost his card again after 2012, but he returned to the winner’s circle in 2014 with a victory at the Dubai Open on the Asian Tour, which earned him a two-year exemption on that circuit.
Notable Events and Milestones
Atwal’s most iconic moment came at the 2011 Wyndham Championship, where he turned a Monday qualifier’s berth into a PGA Tour title. He was also the first Indian to play the Masters Tournament, having Monday-qualified for the 2011 edition shortly after his Wyndham victory, and he remains a historic figure for having been the first India-born player to earn a PGA Tour card through qualifying school in 2003.

Across his career, Arjun Singh Atwal has accumulated 13 recognized professional wins, spanning the Asian Tour, the European Tour, the PGA Tour, and the Nationwide Tour. He has been a consistent winner on the Asian circuit and a breakthrough winner on both the European and PGA Tours.

Atwal’s lone PGA Tour victory came at the 2011 Wyndham Championship, where he became the first India-born player to win on the tour. The win was a Monday-qualifier success story and is widely regarded as the most significant achievement by an Indian golfer in PGA Tour history.
European Tour and Asian Tour Highlights
On the European Tour, Atwal recorded three career wins, highlighted by his five-stroke victory at the 2002 Caltex Singapore Masters and his win at the 2003 Carlsberg Malaysian Open. On the Asian Tour, he has amassed eight career wins, including Order of Merit honors in 2003 and his 2014 Dubai Open triumph, which signaled a successful return to the winner’s circle after several lean seasons.
