Early Life and Background
Clara Tauson was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 21 December 2002. Her talent for tennis was first noticed when she was six years old, and by the age of ten she left her local school to attend a program that allowed her to focus more on the sport. In the early stages of her development, she was often compared to Caroline Wozniacki, Denmark’s leading player at the time, though Tauson herself viewed her game as different from Wozniacki’s more traditional baseline style.
Her family financed her early career until 2017, when she began playing professional tournaments. Former tennis player Michael Tauson is her uncle, giving the family a direct link to the professional game.
Path to Tennis
Tauson started playing junior tournaments in 2013 at the age of ten, debuting on the Tennis Europe junior tour that August. In 2014, she became a triple Danish Under-12 champion in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, the latter alongside Holger Rune, with whom she would later reunite on the professional tour.
In 2015, she picked up her first tournament victory, and in 2016 she debuted on the ITF Junior Circuit. That August, aged 13, she won the Danish Tennis Championship by beating Hannah Viller Møller in the final, breaking the record of Caroline Wozniacki, who had won it at 14. She was named Danish Junior Tennis Player of the Year for 2016.
Clara Tauson Career
Junior Breakthrough (2017–2019)
In 2017, Tauson made her debut for the Denmark Fed Cup team and won the tennis tournament at the European Youth Olympic Festival as the top seed. She also debuted on the professional ITF Women’s Circuit and reached her first ITF final in October, entering the WTA rankings for the first time. In 2018, she won the European Junior Championship in girls’ singles and the Osaka Mayor’s Cup, her first Grade-A junior title, and signed a sponsor contract with Yonex.
In 2019, she became a full-time professional. As the top seed at the 2019 Australian Open girls’ singles event, she won the title and became the first Danish girl to do so. The following week, she also became the first Dane to top the girls’ singles world ranking, matching the achievement of Kristian Pless in 1999. In April 2019, she entered her first WTA Tour tournament on a qualifier’s wildcard, and in May she played her last amateur event before turning fully professional.
WTA Tour Debut and First Titles (2020–2021)
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, which paused her career until August 2020, Tauson broke into the WTA top 200 for the first time. She then qualified for the 2020 French Open, her senior Grand Slam debut, where she beat world No. 25 Jennifer Brady in the first round before losing in the second round to Danielle Collins.
In 2021, her first full year as a senior, Tauson won her first WTA Tour title at the Lyon Open as a qualifier, defeating top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova en route and Viktorija Golubic in the final. With that win, she entered the top 100 for the first time, becoming the second youngest player in the top 100 behind Coco Gauff. Later in the season, she won her second WTA title at the Luxembourg Open, beating defending champion Jeļena Ostapenko in the final, and ended the year as runner-up at the Courmayeur Open. She also passed her first million in prize money during this period.
Australian Open Upset and Injury Setbacks (2022–2023)
At the 2022 Australian Open, Tauson made her main-draw debut as a senior and upset sixth seed Anett Kontaveit in straight sets for her first top-ten win, before losing to eventual runner-up Danielle Collins. She reached the third round of Indian Wells, losing to eventual champion Iga Świątek, and made her WTA 1000 main-draw debut at the Qatar Open.
A back injury forced her to withdraw from the Italian Open and the French Open, and a subsequent foot injury kept her out of the 2023 Australian Open. As a result, she dropped as low as No. 140 in the rankings in October 2022 and had to stop working with her coach since 2019 due to a lack of finances.
Return to Form (2024)
In April 2024, Tauson helped Denmark secure promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup World Group II Play-offs, beating Maria Sakkari for her second top-ten win. In November, Denmark defeated Mexico in the play-offs to qualify for the finals among the 20 best nations, the country’s best Billie Jean King Cup result since the competition’s introduction in 1995.
At the 2024 French Open, she reached the fourth round, her best Grand Slam singles result at that point, and qualified for the Olympic Games. She also reached the final of the WTA 125 Hong Kong Open, losing to Ajla Tomljanović in three sets.
2025 Season Breakthrough
In January 2025, Tauson won her third WTA Tour singles title at the Auckland Classic after Naomi Osaka retired in the final, marking her first outdoor title and her first trophy in more than three years. At the Dubai Championships in February, she reached the final of a WTA 1000 event for the first time, defeating Aryna Sabalenka for her first win over a world No. 1, before losing to Mirra Andreeva.
At Wimbledon, where she was seeded 23rd, she reached the fourth round, beating Elena Rybakina along the way before losing to eventual champion Iga Świątek. Her results lifted her to a career-high No. 12 in the world on 8 September 2025. Due to injuries, she was unable to participate in Denmark’s Billie Jean King Cup matches in 2025.
Driving Style and Strengths
Tauson is a power baseliner who generates a high number of winners from both her forehand and backhand sides and can overpower opponents with her serve. Her biggest weakness on court is her movement, which she continues to refine through her work with coach Kasper Elsvad.
Notable Events and Milestones
Tauson became the youngest Danish tennis champion at age 13 in 2016, surpassing Caroline Wozniacki’s record. She won the 2019 Australian Open girls’ singles title and was the first Danish girl to top the junior world rankings.
