Ilya Samsonov Bio
Ilya Alexeyevich Samsonov is a Russian professional ice hockey goaltender who currently plays for HC Sochi of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Born in Magnitogorsk, Russia, Samsonov developed through the youth system of Metallurg Magnitogorsk before being selected 22nd overall by the Washington Capitals in the 2015 NHL Draft. He went on to play in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vegas Golden Knights.
After spending parts of several seasons in North America, Samsonov returned to the KHL in 2025 to join HC Sochi. Over the course of his career he has been recognized as one of the top Russian goaltending prospects of his generation, with comparisons drawn to Andrei Vasilevskiy at the time of his draft.
Early Life and Background
Ilya Alexeyevich Samsonov was born on 22 February 1997, in Magnitogorsk, Russia. He grew up in a city long associated with Metallurg Magnitogorsk, one of the most storied programs in Russian hockey. Samsonov became a fan of ice hockey largely through the influence of his grandfather, and he later chose the goaltender position because he was drawn to the look of the equipment.
Samsonov began playing organized youth hockey in Magnitogorsk and developed within the Metallurg Magnitogorsk system. He played for Stalnye Lisy, the junior affiliate of Metallurg Magnitogorsk, and quickly established himself as a high-end goaltending prospect. His strong frame, listed at 6 feet 3 inches and 205 pounds, allowed him to cover the net effectively, and his early performances in junior competition drew the attention of NHL scouts.
Path to Hockey
Samsonov’s rise through the Russian hockey system was swift. During the 2014–15 season, he posted an 11–4–1 record with a 2.66 goals against average and a .918 save percentage with Stalnye Lisy. He made his KHL debut in relief with Metallurg Magnitogorsk on 11 December 2014, against HC Sibir Novosibirsk, becoming one of the league’s youngest goaltenders at the time.
Heading into the 2015 NHL Draft, Samsonov was ranked as the top European goaltender available, and scouts compared his style to Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy. Despite missing the scouting combine in Buffalo and conducting no interviews with teams, he was selected 22nd overall by the Washington Capitals, making him the first goaltender taken in the first round of that draft.

His final KHL season, 2017–18, was cut short by a concussion, but he finished with a 12–9–1 record and was the starting goaltender for Game 1 of the 2017 Gagarin Cup playoffs.
Washington Capitals Breakthrough (2018–2022)
Samsonov signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals on 4 May 2018. He was assigned to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League to begin his North American career, posting a 19–14–5 record with a 2.74 goals against average in his first AHL season while working to adjust his style to the smaller North American ice surface.
Samsonov made his NHL debut on 4 October 2019, against the New York Islanders, stopping 25 of 27 shots in a 2–1 Capitals win. Following that debut victory, he won his next ten decisions, becoming only the third NHL rookie goaltender since 1973–74 to win his first eleven starts. He was later limited by injuries and COVID-19 protocols, but he did record his first 20-win NHL season in 2021–22 before leaving Washington as a free agent.
Toronto Maple Leafs Era (2022–2023)
As a free agent, Samsonov signed a one-year, $1.8 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on 13 July 2022. With Matt Murray injured early in the season, Samsonov was elevated to the starting role and finished the year with 27 wins in 42 games. He backstopped the Maple Leafs to their first playoff series victory since 2004.
Following the season, Samsonov went to salary arbitration and was awarded a one-year, $3.55 million contract extension on 23 July 2023. His second season in Toronto, however, was inconsistent, and on 31 December 2023 he was placed on waivers after surrendering 22 goals over a four-game stretch.
Vegas Golden Knights Era (2023–2024)
Samsonov signed a one-year contract with the Vegas Golden Knights on 1 July 2024, joining the reigning Stanley Cup champions. He served as part of the goaltending tandem in 2023–24 before again becoming a free agent at the end of the campaign.
HC Sochi Era (2025–Present)
On 1 November 2025, Samsonov signed a two-year deal to return to Russia and play for HC Sochi of the KHL. The move marked a return to his home country after several seasons in the NHL, and he is expected to take on a significant role for Sochi through the 2026–27 KHL season.
Playing Style and Strengths
Samsonov is a large, athletic goaltender at 6 feet 3 inches and 205 pounds, allowing him to cover the lower portion of the net effectively. Early in his career he was known for playing low and aggressive in his crease, but he has since adjusted his stance to stand taller in net, aligning with preferred modern goaltending technique. His lateral movement and ability to track pucks through traffic have been his most consistent assets at the professional level.
Notable Events and Milestones
Among Samsonov’s most notable achievements are his 2016 Gagarin Cup championship with Metallurg Magnitogorsk and his record-setting 11-game unbeaten streak to begin his NHL career with the Washington Capitals. He was also named the top goaltender at the 2015 IIHF World U18 Championships and earned a silver medal with Russia at the 2016 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

Ilya Samsonov Family
Family Background and Personal Life
Samsonov was raised by his mother, Natalya, in Magnitogorsk, and he credits his grandfather with first introducing him to ice hockey. His upbringing in a hockey-driven industrial city helped shape his development as a young goaltender.

2025 Season Performance

The move positioned Samsonov to become a key figure for HC Sochi through the 2026–27 KHL seasons, where the club will be looking to him for leadership in net. His track record in both the KHL and NHL, including a Gagarin Cup title and a 20-win NHL season, makes him one of the more experienced goaltenders in the KHL.
