Jack Leiter Bio
Jack Thomas Leiter (born April 21, 2000) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Texas Rangers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played college baseball at Vanderbilt University and was selected by the Rangers with the second overall pick of the 2021 MLB draft. He made his major league debut in 2024 and is the son of former MLB pitcher Al Leiter.
Early Life and Background
Jack Thomas Leiter was born on April 21, 2000, in Summit, New Jersey, and grew up in the same community. He attended Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey, where he played baseball and was teammates with fellow future professional Anthony Volpe. In July 2018, he appeared in the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game, and later that year he played for the USA Baseball 18U National Team at the 2018 COPABE Pan-American Championships in Panama City, helping Team USA win a gold medal.
As a senior at Delbarton in 2019, Leiter was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of New Jersey. At the time of his selection for that honor, he was 6-0 with a 0.54 ERA on the mound while also batting .364. He was considered a top prospect for the 2019 MLB draft but, because of his strong commitment to Vanderbilt University, he was not selected until the 20th round by the New York Yankees, and he did not sign.
Path to Professional Baseball
Leiter enrolled at Vanderbilt University to play college baseball in Nashville. In his college debut on February 18, 2020, he pitched five no-hit innings with 12 strikeouts to lead the Commodores to a 3-0 win over the University of South Alabama. He was named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Co-Freshman of the Week after that performance. Leiter went 2-0 with a 1.72 ERA over 15 2/3 innings before the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Returning in 2021 as a redshirt freshman, Leiter became a frontline starter for the Commodores. On March 20, 2021, he threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts in his SEC debut against South Carolina, and in his next start he pitched seven no-hit innings against Missouri. He was named the SEC Newcomer of the Year and a consensus first-team All-American while helping Vanderbilt reach the 2021 College World Series finals, where he was named to the All-Tournament team. He finished 2021 with an 11-4 record, a 2.13 ERA, and 179 strikeouts over 110 innings, and he was named Baseball America 2021 Freshman of the Year.

He settled in over the rest of the season, and in his first major league year he went 10-10 with a 3.86 ERA and 148 strikeouts across 151 2/3 innings for the Rangers.
Leiter opened the 2024 minor league season back at Round Rock before his promotion, and after the year he was honored as the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year Award winner. He graduated from Vanderbilt in December 2023 with a degree in human and organizational development, completing his college education even as he transitioned to the major leagues.

He has shown the ability to miss bats deep into games, and his development has focused on refining command and limiting free passes after issuing 56 walks at Frisco in 2022.
Notable Events and Milestones
Leiter’s signature early moments include his five no-hit innings in his Vanderbilt debut and his 16-strikeout no-hitter against South Carolina in 2021. 2025 Season Performance
Entering 2025, Jack Leiter was positioned to build on his first full major league season with the Texas Rangers, where he went 10-10 with a 3.86 ERA and 148 strikeouts in 2024. The Rangers’ investment in the former second overall pick signaled an expectation that he would compete for a regular rotation role.
His development arc through 2022 and 2023, when he dealt with command issues and time on the development list in the minor leagues, made efficiency and walk reduction the main areas of focus heading into 2025. The offseason also brought optimism after his Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year Award, which underlined the strides he made in his final minor league stint before returning to Round Rock to open 2024.
For the Rangers, the 2025 outlook centered on whether Leiter could translate his swing-and-miss stuff into more consistent results at the major league level. With a full spring training and the experience of a 151 2/3-inning rookie season behind him, Leiter entered 2025 looking to cement himself as a long-term member of the Texas rotation.
