Luka Dončić Bio
Luka Dončić (born February 28, 1999, in Ljubljana, Slovenia) is a Slovenian professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Since his rookie season, he has been selected to five NBA All-Star games and five All-NBA First Team selections, and he also represents the Slovenian national team. Nicknamed “Luka Magic,” he is broadly regarded as one of the greatest European players of all time.
Standing 6 feet 8 inches (203 cm) and weighing 230 pounds (104 kg), Dončić has been described as a position-less guard with attributes of a point guard, shooting guard, and small forward. He speaks four languages (Slovenian, Serbian, English, and Spanish) and is one of the most decorated European players to reach the NBA.
Early Life and Background
Dončić was born in Ljubljana to Mirjam Poterbin, an owner of beauty salons, and Saša Dončić, a basketball coach and former player. His mother is Slovenian, and his father is a Slovenian of Serbian descent from Kosovo. His parents filed for divorce in 2008, with custody and legal guardianship granted to his mother.
According to his family, Dončić first touched a basketball when he was seven months old and frequently played with a miniature hoop in his room by age one. He played various sports in his childhood, including football, which he later quit after growing too tall. At age seven, Dončić began playing organized basketball at a primary school in Ljubljana, where he trained and competed with players up to 10 years old. He grew up admiring Vassilis Spanoulis, wearing the number 7 at Real Madrid in his honor, and American star LeBron James.
Path to Basketball
When Dončić was eight, his father began playing for his hometown club Union Olimpija, and youth coach Grega Brezovec invited him to practice. Within minutes, he was moved to the 11-year-old group, and soon he was training with the under-14 team, even though league rules restricted him to the under-12 squad. Representing Olimpija at the under-14 Vasas Intesa Sanpaolo Cup in Budapest in 2011, he was named MVP despite his team’s second-place finish, foreshadowing a rapid rise through European basketball.
In September 2012, at 13 years of age, Dončić signed a five-year contract with Real Madrid and immediately stood out on the under-16 team under coach Paco Redondo. In February 2013, he led Real Madrid to a Minicopa Endesa title and was named MVP. In May 2015, he won the under-18 Next Generation Tournament MVP, defeating defending champions Crvena zvezda Belgrade. These performances convinced the Real Madrid senior staff that he was ready for professional minutes.

He displays proficiency from three-point range, the mid-range, floaters, and the post, while routinely dissecting defenses with his passing. Critics have noted limited lateral quickness defending quicker guards, but his offensive craft, court vision, and knack for clutch shotmaking have made him one of the league’s most lethal closers.
